Default A few questions about the MSF Course

Hey guys, I'm about to take the MSF Course on 8/14 but I have a few questions about it first..

1. When will the test be taken? After the course, or during the course?

2. Will I be able to legally ride my bike when I pass the course?

3. How long will it be after I pass the course to get my certificate?

Thanks for any help.

After you take the written exam you will be taken to the course to continue practice excercises, then you take the driving test.

2. Will I be able to legally ride my bike when I pass the course?

Once you go to the dmv in your state and give them the certificate stating that you successfully completed the course, you may have to take their written exam as well.

3. How long will it be after I pass the course to get my certificate?

Not sure in your state, however in MO we were given everything at the end of the class.

Thanks for any help.

+1 When I took it they said they almost didn't even tell us when we were taking the riding test and were just going to let us keep doing the drills and stuff without us knowing we were being tested.

I think this depends on the state and local laws. I may be wrong (I took it over 10 years ago) but I think in FL completion of the MSF course automaticlly grants you a motorcycle endorsement, you just have to go buy the DMV and show them your completion card.

And, once again I'm not 100% on this, but the way I remember it was once you passed the course and had the completion card in hand, you were considered to have an endorsement anyway with full riding privledges.

Yep, I got a card at the end of the class, took it to the DMV the next day and got the "M" on my lisence, then about an hour later was showing it to the judge to prove that I had gotten my lisence! (I got busted for riding without a permit/lisence and the judge told me he'd be more lenient if I got my motorcycle endorsement)

It must be different here in IL, but the replies above are different than our system. The exam is part of the course, but you know exactly what is going on. We mail out completion cards because there is a lot of paperwork that must be done, but it is usually 2 weeks or less.

Also in IL, if you are 16 or 17, you MUST take the course first, then you MUST go to the DMV and take both their written and riding tests there, on a personal motorcycle. If you are 18 or older, your DMV tests are waived. I know it sounds strange, but that is how it is done here.

Rules vary by state and by age in CA. First, at 17 you'll need a m/c permit to take the course in CA. You need a class C license first.

1. written test early in the course. Riding test near the end.

2. with a permit you can ride EXCEPT no passengers, no freeway, and no riding at night. They mail the MSF certificate which you take to the DMV to get your M1 endorsement on your license.

3. I think certificates take maybe 2 weeks depending on who runs the course.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll be taking the MSF course in California. It's going to be really complicated for me because I'm out of the country right now. My school starts on 8/25, and I'll get to US on the 11th. So I'm going to have to get my car license on the 12th, take the MSF Course on the 13th (classroom) and 23-24(riding), and then get my license asap in time for the beginning of my school :O. It's gonna be hectic. haha

MSF runs year round in California, I think.
So there is no rush.
