Misc info & tips based on my experience with the Motorcycle Safety School (MSS) @ the Mott haven, Bronx location.
I attended an MSF Basic Rider Course in June 2006 at the Motorcycle Safety School (MSS). The school leases space at the Harlem River Yards in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, just off of the 3rd Avenue and Willis Avenue bridges. The classroom portion of the course is held in a mobile trailer and the range portion of the course is held on the range just outside the trailer.
I took the MSS - MSF Basic Rider 2 Day Course, which consisted of a half day classroom instruction and a half day range instruction on each day. In the classroom we watched safety videos and read the book titled, “MSF Guide to Motorcycling Excellence”. The range instruction consisted of field exercises on a Honda Nighthawk 250 or Suzuki GZ 250, where we got acquainted with our motorcycle and practiced street strategies. At the end of the classroom instruction on day two, an exam was given based upon the information we learned from the book. At the end of the range instruction on day two, an exam was given based upon the skills we learned on the range.
If you are going to take the MSF Basic Rider Course @ MSS in Mott Haven below are some tips.Lunch Time
When the local deli rep stops by to take orders for lunch, be sure to place an order with them if you are not bringing your own lunch. While you are not required to purchase lunch from them, MSS only gives you a 30 minute lunch break. There are no other food establishments within walking distance and their prices are reasonable. (You can get to McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts by Car, but with only 30 minutes you may be cutting it close.)
Range
Bring a cooler filled with ice and water bottles and leave the cooler in the trunk of your car. You will feel dehydrated while out on the range and MSS only gives you 5 minute breaks to re-hydrate; not enough time to walk or drive to the deli.
While MSS has limited loner helmets available, the helmets are soaked in sweat making them dirty and smelly. If you must borrow a helmet, be sure to grab your size quick and bring a bandana. MSS states that they sell bandanas but they did not have any during my two days with them. You may want to purchase one of their $50Vespa open faced helmets or borrow a helmet from a friend, which is what I did. If you are using an open faced helmet such as their loner helmet or a Vespa, bring clear riding glasses as you will need them. MSS also sells clear riding glasses, but they’re overpriced.
