I don't want to give up my MT license, it's my shield from insurance

ITS FREE IN PA? ahhh...does it still qualify you for getting your license the same way it does in Jersey?

yep - if you pass the test at the end of the class, you have your license.

One thing my rider coaches did not mention which I think they should is that once you pass the class and buy a new bike, you should take it to a parking lot and go through as many of the exercises as you can with your new bike. I've found that the brakes on the SV are a wee bit(much) stronger than the ones on the 250 Nighthawk.

The MSF has saved my ass more than once. I still flip through the booklet they gave me to brush up on certain things.

I don't see why everybody doesn't take it.. $90.. they GIVE you a fun bike to ride around in a parkinglot with, that you can crash with no expense out of your pocket. The information is VERY usefull. It saved me $170 on my insurance. During lunch they even let me and a friend ride around for an hour while everyone ate.. I was cranking my little dualsport up to 40mph comming out of the turn they set up. I even pulled a wheelie and didn't get yelled at. EVERYONE in my class passed, and 50% of them had never sat on a motorcycle before. One lady even dropped her bike the first time she took it off the kickstand, by the end of the weekend she was riding figure 8's like everyone else.

CONGRATS!!

Glad to hear that you were smart enought to take the MSF course as a new rider. Great choice for your first ride too! I was a new rider at age 30, took the MSF course before I even bought my first bike, a Katana 600. Almost 2 years later I'm on my second ride which is a 96' Vulcan Classic 800. Hard to believe but I miss the Kan o' Tuna. The Katana 600 has gotten a lot of crap over the years since it isn't a true sportbike, but I thought it was great as a first bike.

This doesn't relate to this topic, but I'm going to go look at a bike this afternoon. Hell, the BOSS has AGREED to let me buy another bike and keep the Vulcan. I found a 94' FZR1000 with 6,700 miles on her and is in excellent shape. Wish me luck!!

Take care.... SAFE riding!

Tom

I can't wait. I'm taking my MSF course (Richmond, KY) this weekend. When I called a few days ago, they were booked up through October. The lady called me back later the same night and said someone cancelled for July 23,24,25 and I could have their spot. $100 here in KY by the way, but I'd pay more. I know I'm going to learn a lot.

yeah, DPS has confirmed it for me. I contacted MT, if I can have a new MT c/m license, but they were like: just get the TX one, and if you want to come back to MT someday- get a MT one then

I take my MSF 29-1 Aug, taking a test at DPS on 2nd and I'm taking 2-6 Aug off-work, so I can ride every day for several hours

Default Some Changes Should be made though

I just took the the BRC about 2 1/2 months ago. While I think it was a worthwhile investment, some things are neglected that should be given more attention.

Mainly I would have them provide instruction on how to make sharp turns from a stop. Like Turning right at a stoplight, also some training should be provided for riding on gravel and dirt with a street bike.

All in all it was a wonderful course and I've already gone back for the ERC, I recommend that every rider take it at least once every few years. I plan on taking it every year to freshen up my skill's.

man, MSF is really paying off. Today I got stuck in a rain, 80 miles north of S.A. (Kerrville). We hid at the gas station for about an hour, but then said screw it and took the highway. The guys that rode with me, have been riding for years and they said it was the worst rain they have ever been into... I rode pretty straight-forward and always remembered MSF training. That really helped me keeping my composure when my eye-glasses got wet, the visor is getting pounded by rain and foggin up...

Most important MSF technique (in my opinion): Stopping in a turn

MSF is a life saver

I had a great experience with the MSF in Texas as well. I went in having never ridden a motorcycle, and came out with a profound new respect and understanding for them. I can't imagine trying to teach myself in a parking lot, and know I would still not know some things I learned in the first day of the MSF after 5,ooo miles of riding.
