A friend of mine just gave me his Plantronics 'Halo 2' branded headset. It is wired and connects to a memory card shaped puck which goes into the front memory card slot of the controller.
I turned on Halo 2 to use this (first time ever) and nothing.
He told me that he can hear people talking on his tv even without a headset plugged in but I never have. Could it be something to do with my account, my connection or the headset itself?

Ummm...are you sure you're plugging the puck into the right spot??
If I remember correctly, the regular Xbox controller had ONE spot for a memory card and another spot specifically for the headset puck thing. The headset puck thing should plug into the top slot on that controller.
Then, in order to get it set up correctly, you must start Halo 2 on the Xbox.
Then, once you get to a spot that you can, hit "Y" to pull up your friends list.
From there, hit "X" to open the "Additional Options" screen.
Scroll down to "Voice Output" and hit "A."
The options are as follows:
Mixed-you will hear your team mates through your headset, and enemies through the TV (or surround sound) speakers.
Speakers only-you will hear all players through the TV (or surround sound) speakers
Xbox communicator only-you will hear all players through your communicator headset
Disable voice-turns off your headset
When I used to play Halo 2, I played with the Xbox Communicator Only option. I found the voices through the TV speakers of my opponents to sound horrible...plus, with it on headset only you still only hear the enemy if they are within "15 meters" of your character.
If that doesn't work, then it might be a bad headset.

BTW, I have never heard voices come from my tv even when I have that setting turned on.

Also, the comm. puck only fits in 1 of the 2 slots on top of the controller. The memory card can fit in either one.

Are you playing H2 on a 360 or an original Xbox?
I know when I was playing H2 on my 360, I had ALL KINDS of issues with the mic not working correctly.

I emailed the xbox.com team and there response was overly technical. They had me go to my router's IP Address, make sure there weren't any restrictions on my xbox, blah blah blah. Nothing worked.
Even without the freakin headset, shouldn't I hear people talking anyway?
What's another xbox1 game that people still play online a lot so I can go there to make sure it's the headset that's fooked...

Ummmm...you might have some luck with MechAssault, or maybe Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow.
And yes, even without the headset you SHOULD be hearing the voices coming out of your speakers.

If I'm supposed to hear others on my TV with that setting turned on, then I don't have much faith that any other live game will be different.
That said, it seems like it either has to be my connection or account with xbox live. Are there different tiers of service for xbox1?

After emails and calls to the xbox live customer service, comcast and linksys, I found out that it's a little option tucked away under account settings on the xbox dashboard.
