Well, after bending a third wheel on my RXZ I'm considering a dual purpose bike for commuting.
Yes, roads around here are real bad.
Last March I fell into a pothole and had both wheels bent. Repaired for $120 bucks. Last Thursday I fell into another pothole, the result is that only the front wheel is bent, but it will have to be replaced as even the spokes are bent...
That night I was riding home from my gf's place. At a stoplight I came behind a FZR600 and a CBR600RR. Obviously, when the light turned green, they left me far behind. However, I just saw a cloud of dust and then I saw the friking pothole.
It turns out that the CBR fell into the same pothole, and both tires blew, both wheels were bent, the rear suspension was broken (the shock exploded, it leaked all the oil, and a linkage was broken) and heck, even the engine took a hit as it was leaking oil like a mofo.
So well, the cloud of dust was because of the tires exploding plus the dust on the road, as that part of the road floods everytime it rains, so a lot of sand/dust acumulates in there.
The RXZ was able to handle it nicely, with only the front wheel being bent...
My back still hurts...
Potholes like that are not common, but there are tons of the smaller ones that get your back sore after a while, so I'm considering a dual purpose.
Here is the thing.
XT660 was only sold for a while in Mexico and I found a leftover bike at a department store (not a stealership). I've applied for a credit with them, 13 payments, 0% interest (isn't that great?). The bike was ridiculously overpriced, but I managed to get a 10% discount over a 30% discount. So they are willing to let it go for $8,200, not great, but not bad.
Problem is, I would have to do it ASAP and the payments would be a bit high for my taste, so I would have be very carefull with my expenses to make ends meet.
F650GS is being sold in Mexico, so there is no hurry to buy that one. Also I can finance it through BMW financial services, and while the interest rate is high (13% each year), its competitive. As there is no need to hurry with that one, I could save for a downpayment and make the monthly payments more comfortable.
List price, $10,200, but that includes ABS and heated grips.
I've been told that the BMW is not a very good off road bike and no one seems to know how the XT660 would fare against the BMW, though some people say it is a better off roader.
If I were to chose the BMW, is the Dakar a good option? My main use would be "on-road" but I've always wanted to try a bit of off roading.
So wich one would you chose and why?
