Hey bro, I'm thinking about buying this. Just wondering what your thoughts are on KX 250's. I don't know much about dirtbikes, but my buddy told me (he's a dirtbike guy) to look for one and I found this. It's a little older ('93) but sounds like a decent deal. Thanks in advance bro. I know you'll be full of good advice like always. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/mcy/128877037.html

KX250's are OK. Not my favorite but there a good bike. The Kabaya suspension is supposedly better than the later models Showa suspension. That bike probably has lots of hard miles on it so if it hasn't been recently rebuilt you may want to keep looking.
Something about where he says it used to be a sponsered bike.... Could be a fine bike but if it's been raced by a fast pro in the past it could have all sorts of things that are going to need attention. I know my friend Phil's bikes are always beat to hell and back, The wheels on his bikes generally look like stop signs in 2-3 months. I saw him crush the frame tubing flat under the engine on a new ATK 600 when he cased it off a triple just goofing around!
Also being a 93 pay close attention to the radiators and hoses. They are easy to damage in a crash and arent cheap to replace.
But then again it could be a really good bike espically if it's been maintained fairly well, you won't know until you get a look at it. If you have a friend that is familair with dirtbikes see if he can go with you to look at it.
Right off the bat get better tires. The Maxis is a cheng shin tire and isnt worth crap. I learned the hard way that good tires will save your ass on a dirtbike. Don't buy a cheap tire thinking "ah it's a dirtbike" Dirtbikes will turn and bite you on the butt quicker than you can imagaine... Plus a 250 is going to have loads of power, a cheapo tire will only make it that much harder to control the bike.
The good runing 250 2 stroke motocross bike will have a easy 50+HP and weigh 230 lbs so you can kinda get the picture. They are potent bikes.
I'm leaving to go and check it out in a few minutes. I'll definately pay close attention to what you were saying to look at. Thanks for the advice bro, I'll let you know in a little bit how it looked.

Well, it looked to be in good shape. The frame looked perfect on the underside of it and the radiator and hoses looked to be in good shape. The damn thing ran great, although I did notice that the clutch doesn't seem to disengage all the way. I noticed that on my old kawi too. I don't know if it's normal or not. The little bastard is torquey as hell. The suspension felt good (it wasn't super soft like leaking fork seals). He's willing to go down on the price, so I'm thinking about offering him 1200. Do you think that would be a good deal?

You start out motorcycling with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.
Some people are like slinkies; they're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.
hell yeah man 1200 doesnt sound too bad for a 250 that runs pretty well. Your gonna have a blast with it. Be careful though those 250s will bite you in ur ass though if ur not careful. I'm super happy i got a 125, i wouldnt be ready for a 250. Post up some action shots when u get a chance

Thanks guys. I can't wait to take it out. I'd ride around my neighborhood, but one of my neighbors (unemployed and living off the state and his wifes income) is home all the fuckin time and bitches when I fire up anything that isn't quiet.

Right on! Good deal from the sound of it! The dragging clutch isnt too bad usually when it gets warm it will be ok. Ive had several bikes that were like that. Could also be the kind of oil they used, some synthetic oils make the material on the plates swell slightly and that can make it drag and make neutral impossible to find sitting still.
