What is it on? The difference between a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke are pretty big. A 4 stroke will generally last longer than a 2 stroke. The 2 strokes soak the packing with oil and it then bakes into a hard sort of crust after a while and gets louder as it gets more oil soaked. 4 strokes if ridden extremely hard will burn the packing out fairly quickly.
I used this packing called "Ceramic Wool" it looked like white fuzzy string a bit under 1/8th inch around, came in a plastic bag that was all puffed up with this big wad of the stuff in the bag. Enough to do 2 re-packs on a dirtbike silencer or 1 on a sportbike can.
It was slightly quieter than fiberglass initally but seemed to get soaked with oil faster. It didn't burn easily in 4 strokes and lasted pretty long in my White Brothers DR 440 dualsport. It had a White Brothers Megaalloy system on it.
