Default A Whole New 'What's Up?' Thread

What's up?

Life in the PNW is good. Garden is growing. It's raining a bit, which is weird for July. Lovin' life.

I don't miss Midwest summers, that's for sure.

I get boarded by the Army on August 1st to see if I get selected for flight school.

I had to formally renounce my Dutch citizenship.

I have also applied for permanent residence status in New Zealand. Anglophones who have lived in the U.S., G.B., Canada, or Australia for more than 10 years are eligible to enlist in the NZ armed forces. Residency applications for individuals seeking enlistment in the army are expedited through, as you can imagine.

This past year has been interesting. I wonder what the next 12 months hold.

You're a curious one, cherub. Why don't you, if you want to serve in the military, serve in the U.S. Military? Or, are you just bent on doing it your way and whoring out to whoever will take you on your terms? I wouldn't say that is really conducive to learning the lessons you stated you want to learn.

hmm weird I didn't have to renounce my Italian citizenship when I was enlisting in the Marines. I also didn't have to give up my US citizenship when I served in the Italian army.
Goodluck cherub hope you'll get to fly!

What was your security clearance, Grifo? I think that cherub's issue is that, as a Warrant Officer, he'd have a TS security clearance. Probably can't get that with dual citizenship.

I guess you missed the first sentence of my post. The second sentence should show you how far I've gone in my attempt to join the Army.

I'm more interested in diverse experiences.

The FFL is different because of the culture that surrounds it -- men don't join the Legion to serve France, they join to experience the Legion. There's simply no other organization like it in the world.

In the unlikely event I decided to move to NZ and attempt to serve in their military, it would be done out of a similar motivation: to experience both NZ and soldiering.

And of course it will be on my own terms, to some extent. I'm volunteering for something, so at the very least the "job" should be on my terms.

Grifo, enlisting is a little different than commissioning. Like Gregor said, the security clearance is the biggest issue.

I guess you guys are right I was just a grunt. If I could do it allover again I would try the warrant officer way as well. I always wanted to fly, and in a sort of way I did.

Good luck. Don't plan on reporting to the political officer when some D.I. hazes your scrawny hippie ass.

And it's probably best to leave the post-modernism philosophy at home as well.
