Unhappy S2R catalytic coverters.....

WTF? these things are humungous and rattle at mid-high revs.

I just bought a 07 S2R 1000 and have only put 7 hunny on it so far. I've been putting in the 104+ octance booster for the last two and a half tanks and noticed the cat and pipes forming rust rivers all over. I have yet to see the moisture leaking anywhere but the metal is all tarnished from what looks like rust. Is it possible that the ocatance juice is doing something strange in the cat? Also, i have just purchased 5gallons of 100LL from the aviation field and am now reluctant to use it due to the cat.

anyone have comments/suggestions on what might be causing the rust?

thanks,

El Fookman

Not sure about the rust, but stop wasting your money putting in Octane booster

I plan to take it to the dealer for the maintenance but i believe they won't help very much, as they suck! (side note: stay away from Honda Peninsula Ducati in Sunnyvale, CA)

anyone have comments/suggestions on what might be causing the rust and if i will kill it with 100LL?

thanks,

warranty, yo. i don't know what the freak i was thinking would happen with that expensive piss, but it seemed like a good idea at first?

what about 100 low lead, anyone think it would hurt the sensor or poison the cat? maybe i'm just getting stupid with the whole octane nonsense, but i though Ducs like the high stuff. i suppose i'm stuck with less than optimal performance untill the warranty's through.

I use Super Unleaded (93-Octane) in my Monster; some use Regular. It seems that everybody gets different results, depending on the type of gas. I don't believe that there is anything that states the necessity to use anything higher than 93-Octane. It is calculated differently in Italy, and is represented as a higher number, but translates to 93.

Inceasing the octane level does not increase your power one tiny little bit. Your engine is designed to use a certain minimum octane level to avoid knocking and consequent engine damage. If you use fuel that is too low in octane, you will get pinging and detonation and damage. If you are above that minimum octane level, you get normal power; how far above the minimum octane level makes *zero* difference.

Octane rating is actually a measure of *resistance* to combustion; a higher octane rating means it does not combust prematurely in response to high compression. Actually, a number of people who can be trusted with engines recommend using the octane level closest to the minimum needed, as a higher octane rating can cause incomplete combustion and carbon deposits.

If you know you will be feeding an engine a higher octane rated fuel, you can then design the engine to have higher compression so as to be able to get more power; this engine will then require that higher octane level to avoid damage. This is the use and point of racing fuels. But they only help if your engine is designed to use them. Otherwise its a waste of money at best.

i dont know about your ducati but most sport bikes should run high test not 87 check your manual to see what is suggested. 104 is higher than than recomended and could make you lose power. if you do a search on octane i'm sure youll find about a bazillion threads on this topic

Octane rating is such bullshit.

Run the lowest octane that doesn't cause your engine to ping.

To add to what PhilB said, I believe that Ducati engines have compression ratios of 11:1 or better, which works for higher octane gas (not super high octanes).
