Mixed Martial Arts...like UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship).

I haven't seen that gym, but there are others around us; there's a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school on Greenwood, just south of 85th that is supposed to be good.

I used to belong to that Gold's. I got sick of it.

Bummer. Anything is better than nothing, I say. Now that the weather is finally getting nicer, I'm more motivated to get out and do stuff.

Do you think MMA Gyms welcome people who have no interest in actually fighting?

That is my only concern

ahhh...got it.

I actually looked around quite a bit for martial arts gyms about a year ago. I liked the one in Greenlake because it was a blend of martial arts with the focus on real world situations and techniques. For instance, they say they don't teach any kicking above the waist since it can leave you exposed, and instead teach short compact moves designed for close-in fighting. Sounded like most kicking was aimed at the knees. Sounded cool..but I flaked...

I also found an ex-special forces guy in Magnolia that teaches the style used by special forces (go figure...ha ha). That one sounded cool as well...pretty intense though.

Yeah...the Golds kind of sucks, but it's better than the Pure Fitness I used to go to downtown. That place was like Ben Stiller's gym in Dodgeball!

In my experience yes. I boxed in Italy for 4 years, when I first joined I did just to work out (got sick of lifting) and i meet this boxer who intruduced me to the coach. I went a full year training along the fighters, same routines and hours sparring a bit with non fighters.
One day I decided that I wanted to get into the ring, I was told no at first by the head coach, his assistant later than evening put me on the ring with a more seasoned experienced regional fighter of my same size (75 Kg then). I smacked that dude into the next week. So they started watching me and correcting some of my flaws. Six months later I was in the regional tournaments. I won 8 fights, draw 5 and lost 3 I then moved back to the US and I stopped (lack of boxing gyms in my area) I own a punching bag that takes a beating every other day.
I had my share of black eyes bruised forehrad and jaw, but my nose is not broken. I broke two noses in fights. One of the guys "Pino" got so mad that he gave me a black eye and knocked my ass out at leat i broke his nose I felt good about myself, I'll never forget that bout.
note we wore twe groin protector, belt, and helmet

I would agree with Grifo, and add to it. I think it depends on the gym. From talking with a friend who has trained BJJ for several years, I know one local gym is more fitness/training focused and the other is competition focused. The gym I'm looking into makes it clear they are cool with beginners and such.

I still occationally train in BBJ and Judo Kai. I prefer to stay on my feet on the job I wear too much crap to be rolling around. Last time I did I busted my radio, plus You also need to protect/worry about your sidearm.

Grifo - I stumbled across a place in Thailand that will train you in Muay Thai for something like $250 a MONTH! Two training sessions a day, one-on-one, lots of sparring, etc. They will actually get you fights in Thailand if you want. Accommodations included.

Uh, no. Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand. They have rules, sanctions, etc. There are competitions there like we have county fairs and shit. It's a real cultural thing there.
