another all hands captain's mast ... on a saturday morning.
it's not for me, but an E4 who received a DUI in downtown san diego.
this is the THIRD all hands open captain's mast held on a saturday morning at my command in the last 10 months. the first was all hands in working uniform, the second was in dress blues, and NOW, it is will be dress whites with medals!
the captain said it is not punishment for all hand's to attend, but a means of support for the person the hearing is for.
i am ranting b/c i don't have the medals and went to the exchange today for pricing. i need to purchase 5 medals, for a total of $54.00, then i have to pay to have them "mounted," at $5 per medal ($25). so, for me showing this nimrod support is gonna cost me $79, the inconvenience of an early saturday morning muster, and standing at attention/at-ease for about 45 minutes.
thanks shipmate ...

that blows. We have a really lax command. Our clinic is pretty small though, but the whole base in general is just a twilight zone. We've had a handful of dui's this year and 2 deaths.
Our CO began booting ppl on their 1st dui last OCT. Hes booted 3 or 4 so far at an all hands/capt mast. Would have been more but during that time we did an 8mnth crusie. he still manage to boot one in the middle of cruise

maybe he's figured out that ppl are going to drink, ppl are going to die, and theres nothing he can do to stop it. As much as ppl kiss ass and make him feel like god, he is not... Ppl get dui's working at wal-mart, at school, mac donalds. It has nothing to do with military; its life...

dude, i am all about that man ... i just wish some of the "brass" would realize they don't completely rule a person's life.
edit:
it's more of a demoralizer than preventative, but for some reason, the navy really likes to punish those who haven't done anything wrong. the navy really likes to preach "personal responsibility" but when someone does something wrong, they aren't the only ones punished. go figure.

I dont know. If he is I havent heard about it. Weird base, being at the clinic on a base full of squadrons kind of alienates us from everybody else also.

That's the military in general. Its just like in boot camp. They figure that if they punish everyone, then the squad will kick in and keep the fuckup in line. Of course, now that hazing is severely punishable, how the hell CAN the squad discipline someone?
"We really don't appreciate you going out and drinking Seaman Fuckup... So we're not going to be your friends until you straighten up there!"
Yeah, like that would work! Your leaders need to be leaders and quit trying to pawn off their duties to everyone else.
And that line about the Command "supporting" the person at mast.... B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T!
He's being made into an example. Plain and simple.
Your CO is a dick and a prime example of why I didn't re-enlist in the Navy.

The Airforce out here if you get a DUI you and your CO have to stand out by this sign in your dress uniform EVERYDAY at 0600 and change the days on it until the next person gets a DUI. Last number I saw was 200 days.
coro, sounds like your CO is a dick and on a power trip. No reason why you should all have to be there with medals.

So... the motivation is for someone ELSE to FU?? THAT makes sense...
Wow, back in the late 70's, early 80's we just got yelled at and we kicked the asses of those that caused us trouble. I have never heard of an "all hands Captain's Mast". Wow. Probably don't let you smoke much either.
The Military is a good thing to have in your past, I found that I couldn't ever resist kicking at them, and they really do always win. So I sucked it up, took my lumps and got out. I now work in Nuclear Power, very lucrative, and look back happily on my Navy years. But I also remember how bad it could suck. Probably sucks even more these days.
Oh Yeah, thanks for serving, I appreciate it sir!

Really the CO, and who puts the CO on public display? In the navy even our 01 & 2's if they fuck up (dui's or otherwise), noone hears about it. They just get a letter of reprimand and disappear. One time on deployment they checked all our emails and they found a few officers with "Unduly Familiar Relationships" their ranks were put on the Plan of the Day but not names. They were flown off and reassigned, but thats a hook up, they skipped out on deployment...

yeah, the navy was in my past and then my wife and i thought it be a good idea for me to try it again. i knew coming back in there would be a lot of bs and tough days. still undecided if i am going to stay in and finish out my 20. at the end of this enlistment, i will have a little over 9 years in, leaving 11 years until my retirement. this command has treated me well, overall. i got two very good schools out of it, sailor of the quarter, and most likely a NAM for my EOT in a few months ... but they didn't give it to me, i've busted my ass while i have been here and put in some long and hard days.
the navy now-a-days is making it very difficult for someone to stay in until retirement ... their way of saving money in the long term. but is putting up with all this BS worth it, really? the "worthless" medical you receive as a benefit and maybe $1,500 a month for retirement pay does not entice many to stay in the full term ...

That is one of the reasons I got out. I didn't see the point of staying in just to recieve "free medical" and the retirement when I could get out and make almost triple what I was doing and don't have to worry about all the bs and deploying.
