Default Return flight through military

Long story short.. my wife is active duty. I'm currently unemployed and thinking about taking a nice long trip from SD to AK on the SV. Is there any way I can goto one of the bases in AK and have them fly me and my bike back to SD? I realize it would be on a standby sort of way but is it even possible?

I am a Loadmaster on C-130's so I am very qualified to answer this question.

The answer is yes (or maybe)... but the thing about shipping your bike is that it will have to be drained and purged and probably shipped as "Space Available". You'd have to call the Departure base's ATOC or Aerial Port and ask. You can ask if you can ship your bike as your luggage, but usually there's a weight limit (100 lbs) hehe.
Since my job is more on the "loading the plane" aspect, I'd really rather you'd call them and ask, you can even call your local Aerial Port and ask them.

good luck with your trip.

So maybe I'd be best off to do it the other direction. Ship from here to AK and ride back.. That way I would have a "support team" here locally to get me to and from with all my junk and an unloaded/drained bike and it's a for sure sort of think instead of having to wait and hope at the final destination.

yeah, that'd be a safer bet, and probably a lot easier.

And another warning, since you may have to wait for your bike on the other end, shipping from there you can forsee how long it will take for you bike to get there so you won't have to wait on it.

Is this something that would be free assuming that the flight is going anyways and has room?

Can I fly with the bike?

I don't see why not, but you'd have to find out when the bike is leaving and try to get on that plane. When it arrives at the destination, I don't know how long it would take to get it, but I wouldn't think anything longer than 24 hrs.

I doubt they'd ship the bike the day you handed it over to them.
But like I said, just give them a call and they should answer everything for you. I'll see if I can get some answers for you as well from work.

I flew on a C17 from Australia with some guys and one of my buddies arranged to have an old Indian Scout motorcycle he picked up there loaded on board with us for the flight back...

Not sure what he had to go through to get it done, though.
