for the ones who went through fire training in navy basic training, you'll recognize this video.
if you haven't seen it before, this is footage of a flight deck fire started by a misfired rocket on the flight deck and just gets worse as the fire spreads to the planes parked near the fire.
135 Sailors died as a result of this incident. RIP.

I actually served under Capt. "Bad Fred" Lewis who was our Carrier Airwing Commander on the U.S.S. Nimitz. He was in one of the F-4 squadrons at that time and I was actually able to hear a first hand account from him about the incident. He's a retired Rear Admiral now.

My uncle left the Forrestal one month before this incident. He was a purple shirt working the deck. Talk about a stroke of luck.
On a side note, my 5 years in the Navy was also spent as a "grape" working the decks of the USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3) and USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70). I've seen this video more times than I can count and because of this, ALL flight deck personnel train regularly for this exact scenario.

Actually I have. Kinda choked me up a little seeing her go under like that. But, better to be sent to the bottom of the sea than cut up and made into SUV's.
The only real bummer is that she was sunk too deep for me to ever dive her. Would have been really cool visiting my old work spaces at the bottom of the ocean.
That happened out here, of the Bellau Wood, my old ship the Valley Forge was sunk out here too. Haven't been able to find any photos of that though.
They're probably not too far apart. The Navy is pretty monogamous about where they dump their ships. If its the spot (and I'm pretty sure) that I'm thinking of, its in just over 1200 feet of water.
....anybody know anyone that operates a dive boat with ROV's drop me a line. I happen to know where the I-58 is at as well.

My hats off to the "grapes". I have never seen guys work more hours. I'm glad I was not one.
