Question Do you ever worry about joining the job force too late?

So I'm sort of winding down on my first enlistment. I have about a year and a half left. I'm leaning towards staying in at least one more to get some school out of the way for free and pay some more on my house. I have a decent skill now and I'm just wondering. Anyone that stayed in or got out. Did you worry about joining the workforce too late or being too old to establish yourself somewhere else after the military. I'll be in my thirties if I hang around one more enlistment. How old is too old I guess?

As long as you have a skill that is in demand, you probably wont be too old if you stick around for one more enlistment.

But, too old is probably in your late 40's early 50's. Thats my $.02

Also take comfort in the fact that a lot of employers will hire veterans first. In fact, in state civil service land (at least PA), if they interview 3 people and one is a veteran you are required to offer them the job.

Wouldn't someone that retires from the military in thier mid/late 40's be a possible candidate for a supervisory position?

I would think so but I was leaning more towards a military member who does two or three tours. Not really retired but oldER and possibly getting a late start at your civilian career.

What about the retired Marine who never gets a degree but leads Marines and supervises them for his entire career? How would he fair?

I plan on using the military for a higher education but there are some who don't. I'm just curious what people have done and thought about doing what experience they've had with this.

I think he means Drill Instr

To be honest with ya, I wouldn't worry too much about doing one more enlistment. Put another 4 yrs in, call it a day and do what you really want to do. As stated above, as long as you have a skill that's actually in demand, you have nothing to worry about.

I personally plan on retiring in the military. (I'm institutionalized) and find it hard to get a good paying job anymore that has great med benefits.

Also, if you really want to do something, do it. You don't ever want to go through life saying "what if". "what if I got out" "what if I stayed in a little longer.."

As everyone else has been saying, if you have the skill in demand you should fair pretty well in the civilian world. Just a bit of advice though look around for different places to live where the jobs may pay more for your skill and the property is cheaper.
I personally plan on retiring in the Navy but then again it's still pretty early in my career. As of right now I like it, having a few difficulties but in the process of working those out.
