it's official - orders received
i'm bahrain bound (unaccompanied) for 12 months. not sure how i feel about it though, kind of mixed emotions.
all i have to do now is just pass the overseas suitability screening.
any input/thoughts about bahrain (other than it's hot ) is appreciated.

lol! thanks for the best wishes.
i doubt i'll be seeing any action, i'm active duty navy, specializing in computer networks and communications, and i'm going to a comm center in a non-combat zone.
i don't report until november, so i've got some time to get everything in order and help my wife get situated.

From what I hear Bahrain is not bad at all...Other than it being a 12mo unaccompanied. The area is fairly moderate socially (you can find some nightlife and such) and the scenery is beautiful. Hey if I had the choice of doing 12mo in Bahrain or another 12mo in Korea, I would jump all over Bahrain.
Will you be able to take the bike over? That would make the move a bit easier I am sure.

yeah, my sister did a 12 month tour in korea (kooni range, though it has since been given back to south korea). i think she was about 45 minutes outside of osan (spelling???). she didn't much care for it, but she said osan had awesome deals on just about everything.
i've been doing a little research on bahrain. they do not have military housing and all the military guys (at least the navy, not sure about the other services) are instructed to get their place out in town. also, it says everything in bahrain is negotiable, so if you don't like the price of something you can bargain them down. i think i'm going to present rent for $50. i wish it was like that here in san dog!!!!
as for the bike, i'm not sure if i'll ship it over or not. i'd like to, i just have to find the information for motorcycles over there. from what i know, i have to get bahrain insurance, an international driver's license or a local license. not sure, still in the research phase.

Ive never been stationed there, but i ve been there anout 6 times on deployment. Obviously its hot as hell lol. the based is not to bad, they have all the things that the states bases have, so you'll still be able to use the gym, nex, computers all that stuff. As far as out in town, it was pretty cool when we went. We swam with dolphins in one place, went to hard rock cafe a few times, a nightclub, its pretty american friendly although still somewhat dangerous (not everyone is friendly obviously) The gold suque is cool and everything is definitely negotiable, the guys love to barter over prices, gold and diamonds especially. We just stopped in on port visits so i dont know bout housing or anything, but why not stay on base and save the money, and id assume it would be safer, wife wouldnt worry as much. all in all you should make some damn good money, so it might be worth it. good luck. oh i seen quite a few bikes over there, but they drive like maniacs so i might just leave the bike at home lol.

this is from the website of the command i will be going to (ncts bahrain)
"1. There is NO base housing available in Bahrain. You can expect to begin your search for a new home after you attend a mandatory housing brief. E-7 and above personnel live off-base temporarily in hotels, whereas E-6 and below will lodge in the Transient Quarters (TQ) barracks on-base. Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) (not to exceed 60 days) will be provided to offset the cost of lodging and meals while you are looking for housing."
