Cherry Point Marine Drowns While Rescuing Boys

Posted: May. 8, 2007

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. — A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday for a Cherry Point Marine who drowned at Atlantic Beach but who managed to save the lives of two boys he swam into the ocean to help.

Authorities say Master Sergeant Michael Wert and his family were visiting Fort Macon State Park last Saturday when he saw the boys in trouble.

Atlantic Beach Fire Chief Adam Snyder says Wert was able to get to the boys to assist them but apparently got caught in a rip current that carried him about 200 yards out from shore.

Wert's daughter took a boogie board out to help her father. She was able to get the boys onto the board and safely to shore but didn't see her father with them.

Snyder said it took the team of swimmers nearly 20 minutes to get back to shore because of the long distance, and they tried to revive Wert with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while bringing him in.

Wert is survived by his wife, Debbie, and three children.

Under the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you grave for me;
Here he lies where he longed to be,
Home is the sailor, home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill

RIP.

BTW, if you ever find yourself in a rip tide, don't try to fight against it - swim parallel to the shoreline until you're out of the rip. If you get carried way out to sea, again, don't fight against the current. Save your strength and do the dead-man's float until you get rescued or get carried back to shore.

A few of the marines in my shop used to work for him and could say nothing but the best about him. May he rest in peace knowing he served untill the end.

Very good man! I worked with him for a duration......Although we are deployed to Iraq, he was taking care of my buddies house for him. Very unselfish individual who would take the shirt off his back to help you out.....

Damn. Reminds of me of the same story about a former Kansas City Chief.
