Default Proof of service rant

A couple things that bother me about some former military.
1. If you served in the armed forces during or around the same time the Vietnam war was going on but never went, You are NOT a Vietnam vet.
2. If you served for 5yrs you are not ret. as I have seen some ppl put in the signature block. You may be former but not ret. unless you did the full amount of time, did the paper work, had a retirement ceremony and draw a retirement check.

It bothers me in the same sense as folks who claim to be in special forces yet never served in SF and in some cases never even served period.

Hut, i've never seen the RET thing for 5yrs, pretty stupid if they did.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the requirement to be considered a veteran of a foreign war just meant you had to be on active duty during the conflict. At least that is what I was told by the VFW.

I think congress passed something like that since all the Vietnam vets are fading along with membership dwindling.

I was active duty during Iraq/Afghanistan, but was never deployed. Never will I call myself a VFW, until I have been there and back.

When I joined VFW, it wasn't enough to have been active duty during a war, you need to have the campaign medal or ribbon to prove you were deployed overseas. I used one of my expeditionary medals to qualify. They asked me what I got it for and I had to tell them it was classified.

down_on_monday, just stepping up and wearing the uniform is a lot to be proud of. I'd consider myself lucky if I didn't deploy, I got augmented (left in homeport) for school during half of a deployment and was so happy.

Weird, my grandfather was a member of the VFW and he guarded German prisoners stateside during World War Two. Of course he got that job because he was badly wounded during some kind of accident stateside (never talked about it to me) he died of respiratory problems before he turned 60.

Which makes me think about this. In a war like that there are a lot of people who end up doing a lot of dangerous work for the war effort without ever seeing the front, a lot of these people got killed. Shouldnt that count for something?

I know what you mean, I'm in the ROTC program at my school and there was this one kid who was in the mil sci 101 class who just got back from basic and was wearing an EIB! This guy was also in my guard unit so I had the RNCO pull his file to find out if he actually earned it. Needless to say he didnt, so I confronted him about it and he replied with "well my drill sgt said that we performed everthing to EIB standard" So he doesn't wear it anymore.

BTW I'm not in the 75th ranger bat. I'm 11B and its just something I aspire to be. 75thRanger is my name on a bunch of other forums so I'm just trying to be consistent.

Thanks for clarifying that 75th, i know quite a few folks who would be upset if you claimed it and really were not.

Welcome aboard
