callin' the detailer (NAVY) in the morning - wish me luck!!!!
alright, i've put this off until the last possible moment before the navy just gives me the orders they want to give me.
i've been putting off the inevitable b/c i have two choices to make and i don't want either one of them, but in order to get back to the east coast, i have to choose b/t the following:
1) bahrain
2) usns ship (out of guam)
both of these are for one year and will be without my wife.
so, tomorrow morning i have to call the detailer to see if i can get my choice of assignments if i go to bahrain or not. i'd prefer bahrain b/c of the tax free pay, the extra pay, and i'd be on shore and it counts as sea duty.
if i do, then i'm off to bahrain for a year, if not, then hello to underway time for 10 months.

i've been doing a little research and personnel going to commands that are isolated and unaccompanied are authorized their choice of available orders. hopefully i don't have to explain this to the detailer and that she is already aware of this instructions (milpersman 1306-200).

I've been to both places and would take Guam over Bahrain. Even if you go to sea occasionally, you'll hit good liberty ports like Australia, Thailand, Singapore etc....
There isn't much in Bahrain. I wonder if they even allow off-base liberty anymore with the security situation ?
It helps to know people. I had 2 of my squadron buddies as detailers, which allowed me to extend on shore duty waiting for my Army warrant package.
Had a port visit in Bahrain, but before 9/11.

Port visit to Bahrain once, but way before 9/11.

i wouldn't be going to sea occasionally, i'd be underway about 10 months of the year i'd be on the USNS.
plus, on the usns, i wouldn't be doing much in my rate, whereas in bahrain, i'd be doing nothing but my rate.
TAKE BAHRAIN! Sure it's isolated but consider it your "ARDUOUS DUTY" for future eval/promotion/selection. Going on a USNS ship will do nothing for your career. It's SKATE duty and you're not going to get any qualifications out of it. If you're going to go to sea, go to a real ship.

thanks for the advice.
i'd prefer bahrain, but i only called the detailer to make sure that taking bahrain would put me in a position to get to the east coast after the one year there, which she told me it did.

i've spoken to a few chiefs who served on USNS ships and have recently spoken to two Sailors i used to work with who are now serving on different USNS ships. they've all told me the same thing: we get our own state room, or may have to share a room with another Sailor, the quality of life is better, and most of the crew is civilian, and the underway time is about 10 months out of a year.
as far as esws, not all of them have a esws programs. i'll have to look at the list of available billets to see what ships i can choose from.
