Default college on Military scholarships???

Im a 19y/o full time med school student (actually pre-med). My post graduation goal is in the plastic surgery field. This may be a stupid question but what is the military (any branch) administering scholarships on. Do they give neuroscience majors more money just because of their field than they would give like, an engineering major. So to simplify my question, would the military give me a full scholarship, or one of those "whatever % of tuition payed scholarships." to get through college. Just a RUMOR i heard, "The AirForce gives more scholarship money than any other branch." dont know if its true. Im seriously interested in a military scholarship, and have no real idea where to start.

There really isn't "more money" to be had based on your major. The scholarships they give are either full paid 4 year, 3.5 year, 3 year etc etc. Sometimes if someone is not on a full paid scholarship they do give out some money to help out, but it's not going to cover a whole lot. Now I know army gives automatic 4 years full paid scholarships for nursing majors since they are hurting for them, if you meet all of the criteria. The programs usually only get x amount of every scholarship to hand out. Now about the Air Force the "more scholarship money" may not be as in more money per person than the other branches but more along the lines of more schoalrship slots available. I know the criteria for Army scholarships was based on the "scholar, leader, athlete" model. Had to demonstrate something in each of those fields....I don't know about your school but sometimes programs are hurting for cadets and will shell out scholarships left and right just to get their numbers. The best thing is to go talk to the commander at your college and find out how many scholarships they have and what they may be willing to give you....there is no obligation and you will get a lot of your questions answered.

You will obviously have an obligation after you graduate. You can also get education defferment to complete med school before you serve, but you would have to serve a longer amount of time.

^^what she said the military will pay to get highly trained/qualified people. you just have to decide if you want to serve the time.

I'm just finishing up at the Royal Military College in Canada. I have friends that go to all three service college's in the States as well. I know its a bit different for me but since i'm a pilot I have to serve for 7 years after I obtain me wings which is about 2 years of training after this year.

From what I have been told/remember I believe the service period is 5 years after you finish or 7 for pilot as well I believe. Also if I recall you have to get nominated by a senator, or governer...not 100% sure as its much different then your application process though i'm sure you can find everything out at a local recruiting center or on the net..

I think the OP is talking about getting an ROTC scholarship at a civilian college. But you are correct about what you have posted about the Military Academies here

if I am not mistaken if you enlist and then can get into the green to gold program they will pay your way through... I on the other hand am using up my vocational rehab/gi bill/ college fund to get me through college.

Joining the military so you can pay for school, whether it be joining the reserves and doing school, going active duty for the "free college" during and GI bill afterward, or ROTC, or whatever other programs they have is probably the worst idea you will ever have in your entire life. It would be much EASIER to just work a civilian job to get the money, or you could just get a student loan or something.

It seems to me there are 3 reasons to join the military 1) Kill people, 2) Cushy job, 3) You've got nothing else going on. Alot of ppl seem to fall under #3 - and they'll often end up in charge of you. Just my opinon though. But you know what they say, opinions are like assholes.

I'd find another way to get the money dude. Thats my advice.
