I thought that was general discharge but does not specify honorable or less than honorable conditions? I may be wrong though.

Never heard that term I have heard of "general discharge" which is a you kinda screwed up but not too bad so write us a letter in 6 months to a year and we will make it honorable.

There are only five types.
1. Honorable
2. Dishonorable
3. Other than honorable
4. General
5. Bad conduct.

Yea its gotta be a general discharge and like jiggly said if you (assuming this is about you) write the VA I believe you can get it upgraded to an honorable assuming that you haven't committed a felony in the first six months of getting out.

Actually the uncharacterized discharge is what they give you when you are ELS (entry level seperation) which is when you are seperated in less than 6 months of service. This can also be given if you receive an EPTS (existed prior to service) medical discharge due to a disability that MEPS didn't catch and you did not know about. Again this must happen before 6 months of service.

The ELS is a bullshit way for basic trainees to quit and go home without encurring the penalties of a dishonorable discharge.

Interesting. MY buddy found out his gf was prego when he came home from basic and thats what happened I guess. I was just curious because he and I recently applied for police officer at the local Sheriffs Department and he put that down on the app and never got called back. I however did, which surprised me because he is a minority and I figured he would get a response and I wouldn't.

Even though a general/ELS discharge isn't technically bad, they aren't looked upon as good either, generally that means something was wrong with you or you did something wrong that they didn't feel like court-martialing/NJPing you for, so I would see how a law enforcement office would be wary, kinda sucks if he didn't do anything wrong but just life I guess.

Your buddy's g/f got pregnant and he got out because of that? Or did the military force him out?

Yea seems kinda weird, when I was in I knew 4 or 5 guys that got their girlfriends pregnant and the Corps didn't give a rat's ass, just made sure to take child support out of their paychecks!

If you did not complete basic training, wouldn't that mean that you did not serve in the military and would not be obligated to check that little box on an application?

I got one due to epts, and received a dd214. I disagree that a ELS is a bullshit way for people to quit though. I fought to stay in, and thye said no way.

I have to put ELS on my apps though, because i got a DD214, most places dont care, one just simply called a recruiter and asked about my re enlistment code, when he found it was fine, he didnt care

Read what I wrote. EPTS is not ELS. EPTS allows you to keep all your benefits and you are sent home. ELS you lose all benefits. ELS means you voluntarily refuse to train. In other words you QUIT. EPTS means you have a disability which prohibits you from training. In order to receive and EPTS you have to have like 15 different doctors sign off on it. These are 2 very different things. At Ft. Benning they even have different barracks for these 2 groups at RHU.

EPTS is still better than the alternative of finishing basic and finding out about your disability later. Med Boards SUCK.

Yes you get a DD214 even if you are only there for 2 weeks. As soon as you ship from the AG to your basic training company you are considered a soldier.

Ok let me get this straight Trav... your buddies gf got pregnant so he quit a job that guaranteed him housing, healthcare, and extra pay for spouse/child. Good Plan.
