After H.School i enlisted in the Marines. I was hurt in bootcamp and i was ELS'd

Now as i am graduating college and putting in job apps. I dont ask for veterans preferance points, or even put that i was in the service. Because i never made it. Dont really see myself as X-Military

A freind has brought up that this could be illegal, or presumed as lying. All my DD214 says is Entry Level Separation. I am not on any benefits

What are your thoughts?

I understand your thinking about it. I would be the same way. I could easily walk around with an "Iraqi Freedom Veteran" cap on because I am, but I wouldn't feel right because I 1) didn't spend as much time in country as a majority and 2.) I got out about 2 months after it started, granted I did do somethings to help start it off but wouldn't feel right.

Back to your original question I don't know if it's illegal but I would still mention it. Whether you were planning to claiming veterans points or not.

What injury occured?

Dont know, woke up in the hospital with the front of my head split open, no memory for 3 days. A spot showed up on my cat scan. They deemed me to big of an insurancce risk/not fit for duty. Sent me home to get cheked out, if everything was good, re enlist. Found to be totally fine, other than blunt force head trauma. Went to re-enlist, no cigar.

if you apply for a CIVIL service or govt contracter position you have to inform them.

Other than that..........

You still receive credit for such?

no an entry level discharge is just that, it is just you never really served but you were in briefly, he will not get civil service credit but he still has to inform them because they will run his social to see if he is trying to cover a DD

You are still considered a veteran. The day you sworn in at MEPS is the day you joined the military.

The only problem I could see is if you were actually ELS instead of EPTS. There is a difference. EPTS is a medical discharge. An ELS is a failure to conform to military standards.

I recieved an EPTS from the Army back in '94 when I got hurt in bootcamp and was discharged because my MOS wouldnt allow me to stay on with the injury. They wanted to change my MOS I said no its Infantry or nothing. So they let me out. I then enlisted in the Marine Corps 4 years later after I worked my ass off rehabilitating my knee. It was tough I had to get a few waivers but, they allowed me to enter and my MOS was a helicopter crew chief. When I went to enlist in the Marines they considered me prior service. I was only in the Army for 3 months and never completed boot camp.

Write a letter to the VA or talk to someone in the VA to see what your actual status is. They would know the answer.

Edit; discharge was an EPTS

Also there is a reenlistment code on your DD214. Ask a recruiter what you code means, that might help.

hey that sounds almost like what happened to me. I enlisted in the army out of h/s. I came down with pneumonia and they didn't catch it. Ended up failing my PFT and sent home with an ELS.

I came back and got a waiver and enlisted in the Marines, now I'm at my MOS school after getting through 4 months of bootcamp and MCT. I'm a 26 now.

JD, I'd try getting back in with a waiver, it's possible as long as you are ok physicaly. Most recruiters wouldn't want to mess with you though, because it will be very hard to get you back into the military.
