Default Adopted a Platoon

Hey You All,

My department at work (8 people) has adopted a platoon from the 10th MTN 1/32 (Infantry) out of Fort Drum. They are shipping out for Afghanistan as I write this. There are about 35 soldiers in this platoon. Anyone on here interested in corresponding w. them? Nothing expensive or heavily time consuming, just maybe some letters, etc. Remind them that we're all proud of them and apreciate their efforts.

I have a roster w. names, ages and interests. Several of them list Motocross as an interest/hobby. Not sure exactly how I'll be getting the letters or anything else to them yet. Planning on putting some sort of shipment together every 6 weeks or at whatever interval I can afford.

Cheers. My outside email: barto @ onebox.com

This is interesting. I've been on Google, trying to gather some history on the Division, etc.

I believe they are 1st Platoon, 1/32 (Infantry) of the 10th Mountain Division. Question: So what does the 1/32 mean? How many Brigades are there in a Division? Thanks

we should send them WORK SAFE jokes and stuff, no links files only, they really appreciate it, and the one of the biggest grips is they never had any emails to read on the weekends.

Quick Update: I've forwarded the URL of this forum to our Platoon contact. He said that they will have mail and email eventually, but their deployment is moved back a bit, looks like the end of Feb. now. Many in the platoon list 'Family Guy' as a favorite TV/Comedy show. The younger soldiers also like Maxxim and FHM. Wonder if it is permissable to send these over. I've looked through and nothing obscene in there (by US standards, anyway).

The 1-32 stands for 1st battalion, 32 regiment. Underneath the 1-32 will be companies, and underneath those will be platoons. The 1-32 is an Infantry Regiment, which is under the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, which is under the 10th Mountain Division.

I was over there with the 2/504th air-assault infantry and my brother is over there now training the Iraqi Infantry and Military Police.........You are not supposed to receive any reading material that contains anyone who is not fully clothed in a respectable fashion. Any person (male or female) caught receiving said material can be brought up on UCMJ charges of "conduct un-becomeing". I only know this through my own misfortune of getting a issue of sports illustrated that was sent to me by my folks before we knew better. If there is anything that I can do just give me a shout and I'll be there. Hurrah!

Hey thanks for the posts everyone! More complex than I had imagined, those org. charts and naming conventions in the military. If I had to take a test on that stuff I'd fail straight away.

Here's the latest. Our adopted platoon is shipping out this coming week to replace a unit which has just completed a tour. Their main station will have AV equipment and an X-Box (I'm partial to the PS2, but some say X-Box is just as good...).

Wish I had read the post before this one a couple weeks ago. I sent them a box of books and magazines to read on the flight over. Looked through the USA FHM and there wasn't any nudity. Unfortunately we got them a few copies of he UK edition. I did not open them 'cause they were sealed in plastic and I thought they'd be better protected from the elements. (Duuuh.)

Well, when our shipment arrived on base, it had to go through a security check and they found the UK FHM's. Staff Sgt. sent me an email saying that a couple MP's showed up w. the box and asked him who'd sent it... said they were going to come after ME!!!... So after I got my heart out of my throat, and stopped obsessing about how I'd explain all this to my boss, I read further down in the email where he said 'By the way, just kidding about the MP's....' So we can't send any media with naked or nearly naked people in it. They esp. can't risk that stuff showing up in a foreign country.

Anyway, we've pitched in and picked up a season's worth of 'Family Guy' on DVD. We're waiting to get an APO for them.

We wish the 10th Mtn 1/32 B 1st Platoon smooth travels, successful operations and speedy return to their families and friends back here in the States. May the Almighty watch over them and keep them safe.

When I was in Iraq/Kuwait (OIF II-Mar 04-Mar 05) you can buy Maxim/Stuff/FHM and the likes at the small shoppettes, but no soft porn like Playboy and stuff. Porn is illegal, but a lot of GI's have it on their computers via mem stick or e-mail or ftp or cds/DVDs. And believe it or not books are overwhelming for some. They take too much effort. Popular Mechanics was really in demand as was SOF/weapons mags/Newsweek/Sports Illustrated and things like that. For movies: latest releases are great to send DVDs. People share them like crazy. And the DVD series for CSI, The Shield and all of those are kewl too. Batteries (AA) and white socks(laundry turns them ugly gray and they never come really clean). And needless to say, phone cards, ramyen, Easy Mac and baby wipes.

And by the way...please send snail mail letters. There is still nothing better. E-mail is nice, but a letter in the hand is so much more meaningful. You should see a servicemember's face light up when they get a letter with a frickin' stamp.

I'll write to them is you send me an address, i.e. APO number.
