AirForce INTEL job?
Anyone here have an airforce INTEL job? I'm leaving May 23rd with some signal explotation job lined up. According to what I've read on about.com I'lll end up in san angelo tx after bootcamp is done. Are most INTEL jobs desk jobs? Anyone with experience in this sort of thing?

Most intel jobs are desk jobs but some are not...some acutally fly...not saying you become a pilot but your duties include flying at least once a month. I knew intel people when i was stationed at Kadena AB in Okinawa Japan that were enlisted that had to fly at least once a month in the F-15D. They were on flying status at got flight pay because of it. You get deployed as well but again..your at a desk in a highly secure building.

My MOS is intel, but I still don't know much about it, I just got back from bootcamp.
I liked the fact that I could get a good civilian job later on, I'll start my MOS training in about a month now, right after I get out of MCT.

Dude, if you think AF intel or military intel is going to be like that you are mistaken. I'm hoping there is some thick sarcasm implied.
Anyways, I've been in the Intelligence business (military/civilian) since 96. I've done a little bit of everything. All-source, HUMINT, imagery, etc.
Yes, most intel jobs are desk jobs. There will be some occasions where you may be deployed. If you are going sigint your chances may be better to get deployed, etc. However I would say your safe to say your going to be doing a desk job.
Word of advice. Keep ALL copies of your SF86 (your security clearance papers) BELIEVE me you'll need them later when it comes up for review. Keep your clearance active, get a diverse background in all aspects of intel. Don't focus on just SIGINT. The more you know the better you will have to get a job. Also don't think when you get out it's a gurantee you'll get a job. AF sigint job you have a good job going to NSA. If you do get stationed there network, network, network and DON'T burn bridges!!

Actually I could care less if I was going to be deployed or not. I'm joining the airforce hoping that I'll see more of the world than what Houston has to offer. I was hoping to test into munitions or Nuclear weapons, but I failed the depth perception test at MEPS. I think I know what I did wrong though, so hopefully I'll get a chance to redo it before I ship out.
I didn't really want a deskjob, thats why I was posting about it. If I get one, cool. If its not, works for me.
As far as netowrking goes, thats a great tip . Hopefully I'll get to become really diverse in INTEL and become multi-lingual by the time I get out. At least thats the plan anyways

Multi-lingual will be hard to come by. You would have to go to DL school in Cali for that. Honestly that really won't help much.

All of the intel guys we have here just sit around, check their email, go to college and bs all day long.
Even when we had some deploy with us, they just basically sat around and did nothing the whole time, they never left to go on missions or anything, they basically got stuck behind their desk.
If that that is your kinda thing, then cool, but the thing I like about intel is it seems like there is a higher ratio of chicks than dudes, and damn most of them girls are hawwwwwwwwwwwwt.....

---words of wisdom. Burn a CD of it and keep it safe. You can always update it as needed. The wait for certain clearances and SCI caveats can take months on the governmnet's end (if you're lucky) so don't waste time with going back and forth with the adjudicating agency wanting more info......BORE them with details so they have no questions to ask and your file hits the adjudicators desk ASAP.
Here's an industry tip- if possible, get your civilian clearance through the NRO. The fastest turn around going. In my experience the CIA (who we affectionately call the Christians In Action) is the worst for clearances. Maybe because of the Ames debacle.
Try to do All Source intelligence because it's more diverse. Specialists can command a good salary (orbital mechanics math geeks get PAID) but you can find yourself living program to program.
Take advantage of every source you can get your paws on. When I was an analyst I watched nothing but cable news, read papers and lived in the SCIF reading reports on everything from every source I could find. Just cultivating sources for info is important. You will have access to a virtual information overload. Learn to navigate it.
Go to college and take some writing and composition clases. Public speaking classes are worth their weight in gold when you find yourself in front of a two star on short notice with chicken scratches for notes!!!!!!!
And yes, alot of intel is paperwork and reports. College level writing is essential. Take Powerpoint and Word classes. As cheesy as it is, officers love powerpoint, and officers become the execs you'll work for in the civilian world so it doesn't change. A professional presentation is promotion points in your pocket.
Don't be a REMF. Get out in the bush as much as possible. It's one thing to be able to read a map, it's another to know what it looks like in person and where you are asking a LRRP team to go.
DON'T SCREW UP WITH CLASSIFIED INFORMATION, as if you needed to be told.
