Default Just checkin this site out.

I dont have a bike yet, but Im actively looking for one. Im young, and have tuition to pay, but hopefully I can sell my MR2 or trade for a bike+cash or something. My dream bike is an R1... its just a gorgeous looking ride. Maybe when I know more about bikes and whatnot, my mind might change as I look for more things like horsepower and handling, but for now, Im set on an R1 (not as a starter bike of course). Anyways, that about does it for mister-twoster. Looking forward to learning a lot here!

Don't forget insurance and gear when you figure your cost for a bike.
Think small, like the MR2. Small is good starting on a street bike.

How much is insurance typically for an 18 year old?. I also figure about ~$800 will be spent on gear. Ive already got a helmet from my dads riding days, but its just a TAD bit too big. Ill probably end up getting another one.

Welcome to SBN!

If your dad's helmet is too big and over 5 years old...don't use it.

Take the MSF class in your area before while you are shopping for a bike or even now.

There is another list like this on here somewhere, but this is what gear usually runs.

Prices vary based on quality, brand, fit, finish, etc.

Helmet $200-$600
Leather Jacket $200-$350
Good Gauntlet Gloves $100-$200
Boots $150-$300
Leather Riding Pants $250-$300
Full Suit with sliders $300-$1,000 and up (This will eliminate the need for a jacket & pants)

Thanks for the price list, iceman! His helmet is only about 3 years old... rarely worn, still smells like new helmet. I will definitely get something more snug though. Do the MSF courses go all year around? I still dont know all of what I need to be ready to ride, but Ill look into all that tonight.

Put the helmet on your head like you were going to ride and have a buddy pull up on the back of the helmet firmly from underneath. It is uncomfortable, but if it pulls up like it's going to come off...ditch it. If it wobbles around and you can feel movement in there...ditch it.
