Maintenance upkeep costs
Hi VFR's, I really like the look of the new Interceptor. I came real close about 6 months ago to buying one. I heard that the routine maintenance costs with valve adjustments etc are noticably higher than an inline 4 engine. What are your takes? I do alot of my own bike maintenance but not that confident with the valve adjustment stuff. What's the interval? thanks guys

I've heard the same thing, however I've haven't had mine checked yet. I'm right around the 16K mark so it's probably about time to check them i suppose. Most of the VFR guys seem to have found that they rarely need any maintence, in regards to valves until the 2nd sch. maintence interval, I think that's about 40000 miles or something. That's really not too bad, V4 or inline they should be checked at least once and probably adj. too. I have a 98 so I'm not sure how the 6th gen (02-present) models are for sure but..... They changed from gear drive cams to chain driven cams between 01 and 02 so that may have changed something with valve maintence, don't know? Honestly, it's a bike so dependent on how you ride it, it'll probably treat your wallet about the same I suppose. My 98 hasn't needed anything yet!!!! Fingers crossed!! Good luck.

Honda says the valves need to be checked every 16,000 miles ..I just had my bike at the dealer and at 21,000 miles all valves were in spec and since they didnt have to do any adjustments it cost $117 and if they did have to adjust it would have been $236...
The V4 engine is made for longevity/reliability...Just stay away from the 2002-2007 VTEC models ..very expensive valve adjustments $400---$500

I may very well be mistaken but I'm pretty sure that 98 was the first year of FI as it was the first 800 as well. I think all the 4,5,7,750, and 1000 were all carb. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, it's happened once before too!

The first year for Fuel injection was 1998 and that is when the engine was made a 800(781cc) . The Vtec did not start until 2002 and slowly killed the VFR...The last year for the gear driven cams was 2001...In 2002 honda screwed up and went back to elcheapo cam chains/tensioners and installed Vtec on the VFR and made the bike more of a touring machine than sport bike.
Vtec is where under 6800 rpm only 2 valves per cylinder is in operation for lower emissions and better gas mileage...After you get past 6800rpm the other valves are activated and now all 4 valves per cylinder is working creating a false sense of horsepower rush..
The 1998-2001 models dont have VTEC so you have great power all the time .

Baileyrock over on the VFRD forum has around 50,000 miles without a valve adjustment. I'll probably check mine around 25,000 or 30,000. As Nailer45 said, Honda says to check them every 16,000.
