Default R1 Chain & Sprockets?

I need to replace the chain & sprockets on my 02' R1. I've got the new chain & sprockets. In order to replace the chain,( as im told by a friend) I need to cut the new chain to fit? Is this correct? Or is there a master link to take out to fit? This is my 2nd sport bike. I've always had dirt bikes, which was no problem to replace the chain(s) on. Any help would be great! Thankx..
