Default 2002 R! Engine knock

I recently purchased an R1. It has engine an knock, which has me concerned.

It cannot be heard while the bike is idling, or revving, not even with a stethoscope.
It is more prominent, when the bike is warm, and very prominent under acceleration, especially at about 7000 RPM. Stangely enough, it cannot be heard, unless one is wearing a helmet. It seems to be coming from the top of the engine. As far as i know, the bike has no mods. I have recently though, put in a semi synthetic oil, which i think may have graphite in it.

Before i strip the motor, acan anyone inform me,is this a common fault on the R1,or is it worse?

Thanks

The symptoms you are describing sounds most like a rod or crank bearing going out. You can verify this by draining the oil, and looking for tiny copper flakes in the oil. If you see any, it's time to rebuild your motor.
