Put a new battery in my 2000 Triumph TT600. Fired up fine. Went for a ride, but speedo isn't working. Only says 3-4 mph (yeah, right!). Was working fine before the battery went out. Haven't done anything else to the front wheel assembly. Already replaced it once about 3-4,000 miles ago. Could it have gone bad already? Or does the CPU need resetting? I know you have to fire up the bike about 4-5 times before the check engine light goes out and I've done that already too. Help!!
I had two TT600s in the past, a 2000 and a 2001. Both had the speedo problems associated with that front wheel magnet. If you replaced that with a used one, then chance are it just broke, too. They are delicate, so if they weren't installed exactly right, it shortens their life. It's not the best design ever. There are some improved designs floating around, but I can't tell you much about how to make them. They are all home-brew as far as I know.
It shouldn't be an issue on a TT600, but if you load a TT600 map into a Speed 4, it can blank out the speedometer for some reason. That's probably unrelated to your issue, but it's information if the ring isn't damaged.
Ya, but you see.....the first battery died. Wouldn't even hold a bench charge, hence the brand new one. And the speedo was working before the dead battery went out so I'm pretty sure the magnets are fine on the wheel. I'll go turn it on and off a coupla times and see if I can't get it to reset.
Okay, got that new speedo hub everyone is talking about for $45 and installed. Question though. The one I pulled out was greased/lubed. Is this the way it should be? Seems like it would interfere with the magnetic electronic transference.
Also, the "cheap" magnet hub looked fine. No cracks, chips, etc.....
Okay. No replies on here, so I stopped off at the local Triumph dealer and asked them. Mechanic there says that he never has greased the hub. Maybe a light coating of light oil, but no grease. So, there ya go!
Sorry to have not replied. I didn't notice the question. Grease shouldn't make a difference to the magnet, at least not until things burn up. The way the assembly works is hinky at best. If I remember right, there are a couple metal tabs, sheet metal if I remember right. Those fit into the slots in the magnetic collar and make the collar spin with the front wheel. Removing and replacing the front wheel without getting it all lined up will cause the speedo to not register a speed. The clocks light up, but you get either zero or a low speed reading. And then eventually the magnet falls apart. If your mechanic had the front wheel off, I suspect that the tabs didn't get lined up properly.
