So, I have answered my own question. First a little background on why I wanted to "update" my forks. Well, as anyone that owns an old sportbike knows, parts can be hard to come by. The FZR ran it's first two years pretty much unhanged, but I have had a hard time finding parts for 87'-88 FZRs. So I thought it would be easier to find parts for 89-93 FZRs since there were more of them on the roads.
So I have started the swap and I will say this to anyone thinking over this change, it will work, but you need to have a complete front end from handlebars to the front wheel. A few parts will swap over, like the calipers, rotors and tire. But you will need the upper (with handlebars)and lower triple clamps, both fork tubes, the axle bolt, the rim, and the fender. Oddly enough the rim is the same size, and looks identical but the wheel bearing is a different size to accomidate the 2mm larger axle bolt. I know what you are thinking, just swap the wheel bearings right. I thought so too, but it just does not work that way. The only change needed so far on the frame is to drill and tap the steering stop out so you can add a couple of bolts to make it adjustable, the 89 - 93 had a wider steering stop, so this will compensate for it. On the bright side, the upper and lower triple clamps bolt right in, steering shaft is the same and so are the upper and lower head race bearings. So far so good so for those that are interested i will post more as i progress.
