Bike shutting off with throttle on

I need some serious help I am at a complete loss, I recently purchased a 1995 Suzuki RF900R, every time I hit the throttle the bike dies, it also idles very rough once I get it started. There was quite a bit of rust in the tank, so I cleaned it out, and resealed the tank. Next I checked the petcock lines were reversed so I fixed that and replaced the petcock completely. Still happening, took the fuel pump out rust in there cleaned all the rust out, tested fuel runs through no problem, pump was not rusted just flakes mixed in with the gas. Then moved on to the carbs, took em out fully cleaned them and put em back in, fuel is getting to the carbs and bowls will fill up but the bike will not idle smoothe, and every time I hit the throttle in the least bit or try and turn the choke down the engine dies out. I also checked all the plugs and cleaned them as well. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Did you make any changes, or install pods??? Make sure the airbox is sealed and their are no air leaks. I think you need to do more carb cleaning

Sounds like if there was rust in the tank, and the fuel pump, there's probably varnish in the carbs.

did you clean the jets when you did the carbs?

Checked, the airbox it's not leaking air, I did clean the jets and reset them to the correct spacing, fuel is coming through the jets.

You've got a fueling problem there.

I guess that the petcock is opening completely (as it is new) what about fuel pump pressure and flow???

Did you cleaned the carbs with compressed air or just soaked them in carb cleaner?


Somewhere, something in the fuel system is not working properly, don't matter if you cleaned it, it aint working, so check everything again and clean the carbs with compressed air.

Tip: Paint thinner is extremely good at removing barnish, soak the carb in that stuff (REMOVE ANY RUBBER BEFORE DOING IT) and blast it with compressed air.



Another thing came to my mind. Maybe, just maybe, the diaphragms on the CV carbs are busted and leaking air, that would create a lean condition (pretty much what you described).

Some carbs have some rubber gaskets that could also leak air if they are in bad condition.

The point is, there is more air than fuel getting into the engine. I don't know if it is lacking fuel or there is too much air.

at school they tought us for every fuel problem there is also a equal electricall problem that could be there instead.

basically you could have a electricall issue

might be a silly suggestion but did you synchronize them? I have seen synchronization solve many a rough idle/running problem...good luck
