2006 Z1000 Speedo issue

Just bought a 2006 Kaw Z1000, and noticed the speedometer is off as much as 10 MPH. I know that all bikes have some variation, but this seems extreme.
At 70 MPH on the Speedo I'm really going 60 MPH.

So I haven't really worked on any Speedo’s on the newer bikes. I have a Kaw KZ1000 and it has a cable that goes to the front end. How does this Z read the Speed? There is nothing on the front end???

did you check the front and rear sprokets to makes sure that they are stock size?

Not yet, but that was my next thought. Has to be some kind of read off the the output shaft. I'll check this weekend.

"Speedohealer" makes an electronic unit that you can adjust to compensate for any variations in your speedometer. It plugs in inbetween the pick unit and the main harness... Costs about $100, works good..

+1 Buy a Speedohealer and borrow a GPS. Your speedometer will be very accurate.

The speedometer sensor comes off the transmission output shaft. Sprocket size or tire size changes from stock will throw off the speedo. Going back to stock sprockets or a speedo healer as mentioned above are solutions. The stock speedometer will likely read a bit high, but not as much as you're experiencing.

Finally got the cover off the output shaft and Yes it has a different sprocket on it. Seems the last owner put a 15T sprocket on it which also explains the quick speed out of the hole. I thought it was really torquie for a stock bike.
Ordering a 16T sprocket to put back on. Thanks for all the advice.

That's the same issue i found on my cbr. I have different front and rear gears. I'm looking at getting the speedohealer. I was told it's cheaper to buy that and do the install then paying for stock gears and having them put in. I dont know how true that is, but I do enjoy having the speed out of the hole. My wife followed me on her bike and she asked me why was i driving at least 12 miles under the speed limit. I thought i was going the speed limiit but I was wrong. Once I got home, i checked the gears and voila! Vortex aftermarkets. I never really paid much attention to them until now.

The price of gear ratio changes shoudn't be that much as long as you can keep the stock chain. If you need to replace the chain (too short or too long) then the cost will go up a lot more.
