Help Me Fix ItA great place to post any problems you maybe having while working on your motorcycle. Most of us are do-it-yourselfers so this is a great way to share any information pertaining to fixing something or adding something on.
OK so I go to hop on my 1996 GPZ-1100 with about 19k miles on her and well I smell gass.....ok this sucks. Look around and yeah it's coming from the carbs. And not your usual bit of gas but rather a bit more. But I figure, hay its nothing and go for a ride. About 15 min later I notice that the idle likes to hover in and around 2,500 rpm...woo freaking hooo. OK maybe one of the vacuum hoses is cracked and or leaking. OK but which one?
How does one go about figuring out which hose is on it's last leg?
Or is it one of those,"Well Shah better just replace them all..." kind of situations.

A hose could be going or a clamp could be loose/worn. If you can see the leak, you can tell which carb it is. Start with those hoses. If it's a loose hose connection, fix it and be on your way. If it's a cracked hose, it might be a good idea to spend a day and replace hoses.

Never out-ride your ability to react (even stop) within the distance you can see (at least on the street).
It could also be that you had a float valve get stuck open. That'll make the float bowl overfill and run out the overflow tube. Makes a damned mess.
THAT is an easy fix at least.
And Shah- stop hitting on my woman. I DO check STN every once in while. I'm watching you.
Who am I hitting on now?
You know you're old when you have to ask that.
Ok it's not a leak per say, i can't see any liquid but sure as poo i can smell extra gass. It may have just been the float bowl that was stuck because the bike did run well untill the 2,500 rmp idel kicked in again.

Did you not know that Cultureslayer was my girlfriend?
Oh.... well then nevermind.
May have been the float.... is the problem gone now? Sometimes a little chunk of crud can get lodged in there for a little bit and screw things up for a while. Then it magically disappears. Annoying.

Sounds like stuck floats. If they are stuck, they will flood the carbs and cause them to drain.
Quick fix,,try tapping on the side of the carbs with a hammer.
Then try some seafoam or carb cleaner.
Then try pulling them and hand cleaning.

Do i know here? Did I hit on her?
Are you sure? I don't recall hitting on her?
Wow I must be getting old.
Any how well after work, the bike sat in the sun for about 10 hours, she smelled much better and rode much better.
So yeah it must have just been one of those things.
I swear my next bike....FI or bust!

I'm just screwing with you. I really don't pay attention to much that goes on over there. I just usually see you pop up in almost all the threads she posts in, at least to enough of an extent that I know who you are. Whatever.
Anyways- good to hear that it's smelling better. I always said that I was never going to buy another carbed bike, but then went and did it again this summer.
Honestly, once you get carbs set up right, they are nicer than FI.... as long as it's not cold and you never want to change the intake or exhaust ever again.

Yeah I hear you, my old 87 VFR had it's carbs professionally done and they were great.
This one...well she has about 20k miles on her and I'm willing to bet good money they have never come out. Maybe this winter I'll make it a project.
Who knows, but right now she is running well.
I'm just hoping her carbs aren't worn out! It happens you know! The needle can wear out the hole and let gas leak by over night.
