Default How to fuk up an oil change

My Triumph Daytona 600 lists the amount of oil with filter change.

Of course all measurements in the Triumph service manual require an engineering degree to convert to the English language.

So I got confused when I changed oil without a filter change, over-filling by the amount of oil in a filter.

Siphoned some of the excess oil out, but that was too slow and killed my back. Note to self: Invest $600 in a bike lift to do $20 oil changes.

So anyway, the oil level is still 1/4 inch above the max fill line on the dipstick.

Can I still run the engine, or will that screw up the wet clutch or cause some other failure?

should be okay.

main thing i'm wondering is why you couldn't just drain out the overfill rather than siphon it out?

Drain it to on or just below the line.

Excess pressure due to over filling can cause undue stress, and may cause you to cry later on.

Ummmm, not to be an ass, but why did't you change the filter? I have never changed oil without changing the filter.

I believe that Triumph, along with MANY other bike manufacturers, states that you only need to change the filter with ever other oil change.

This is usually only the case if you change it more than once a year, though. If you only do it in the spring, you should change the filter ever time.

I would not know 100% for sure if they say that, though- I have five triumphs and ZERO owners manuals for them.

Why not check the oil level when you start getting close to the right amount? Then ease up to full a little at a time. I've never had a bike that took exactly what the manufacturer said anyway. Or is this all part of a conspiracy?

So nobody had an engine throw a conrod from overfilling oil?

I'm too cheap to put on a new crush washer, even though it's safety wired, and I'm too lazy to remove the fairings again.

Can't find my MityVac suckall.

Normally I change filter and oil, but with prices out of control, I'm cutting back on my addictions.

Hopefully the filter isn't clogged and pressure relief valve isn't open. Only 2,000 miles since the last filter change.

Clutch plates were sticking, but the wet clutch is far above the oil level.

I've now corrected my service manual with conversion factors. Why don't Triumph do that? Probably because that's a million-Euro fine and 10 years prison under the European Soviet Union.

That's what most sane people would do.
