Carbed SV650 won't run without full choke
Ok guys,
My 2001 SV650 has been sitting for a couple of years and I want to get it running again. If I recall correctly, I did put some stabil in it but I don't think it will last that long.
So I siphoned out as much gas as I should and put some fresh gas and added some techron fuel injector cleaner.
Took a while to crank over but with full choke on it finally did. A bunch of white smoke coming out of exhaust. Let bike run for about 10 minutes so it was fully warm. Any attempt to give it gas will kill the engine. Any attempt to back off the choke will kill the engine. Any attempt to start the bike once warm with less than full choke was unsuccessful.
I pulled the airbox off and started the bike again with full choke. While the engine was running, I put both hands over the carb intakes. The first time I covered it too much and got my hands sucked on and the bike died. The next few attempts, I limited the amount of air going into both carbs and the bike shot up in rpm's. To about 3500-4000 rpms like you would expect a warm engine with full choke to do.
I didn't have a third hand to give some throttle while I was covering the carbs so I couldn't attempt to rev the bike to see what it would do.
So what do you think? Vacuum leak? Clogged jets? I really need to get this thing running.
Thanks!

Not being able to get it to do anything but idle sounds like gunked jets. You could try doing a thorough soak down with SeaFoam, or you could take out the carbs and clean the jets by hand. By hand ensures the best results, but you'll need to be wrench savvy witha good repair manual.
Seafoam can also help, you could 'overdose' by warming the engine up, making sure it is up to temperature, then shutting off the gas tank petcock. Disconnect the fuel line from the tank, and then feed seafoam STRAIGHT into the fuel line while the bike is idling. Keep adding seafoam until the engine shuts off. Let the bike sit as is for 30 minutes or so. Start the bike up, let it idle a bit, and then try revving it. Should smoke a bit, but should also clean up the problem for the most part. If it still persists, you could try the above steps one more time, but otherwise, you will need to do it manually (Carb cleaner and compressed air is the best way to clean jets) or have a professional do it.

Time to take the carbs apart and clean them

You need to remove and dissasemble the carbs. Parts can be cleaned in a strong detergent like Simple Green or Oil eater (my favorite) but these chemicals can discolor aluminum in 100% concentration.

Pilot jets sound clogged.
Try and find some Berryman's Chemtool to clean the parts in, but don't get anything rubber in it, it'll eat it up.

Yep, time to tear down the carbs for a good cleaning. Once done, change the plugs as they are now likely fouled.
