Default Broken Plastics

short history:
bought the 98 fzr600 a few weeks ago at least 3rd hand with no spark (was told a lady laid it down in a parking lot, and since then no spark). found the pickup coil was bent away from the flywheel - easy but aggravating fix.

now that it's running good i want to work on the plastics. i've read over 30 to 40 threads about fixing plastics, soldering abs, fiberglass work, epoxy, bondo - you name it. as i started looking closer - i think someone has already fixed this front fairing at least once before me - i just want a 2nd opinion.

front left side fairing ahead of the handlebars:

left side rear fairing:

also the rear fairing was rattle-can painted and looks... horrible. the best advise i've read yet was sand out the scratches and repaint - which i'll judge the depth of the scratches and decide accordingly. the front fairing is a different story, though.

the pics are low resolution - HQ one are available.

will i be better off just doing a "make shift" repair - i.e. repair what's broken - or sand out as much of, what i believe is the previous fix, and start over with a solid repair? i will also have to build up or add to - will i run into problems with the adhesion of new materials? what materials should i use?

sand the shallow scratches and bondo the deeper ones. as for the crack check out grasshpr's plastic welding tutorial in the how to section of help me fix it. its a great write up its how i learned. i had some big cracks in mine and after i plastic welded it it never gave me any problems. jsut something to keep in mind i bought a real plastic welder from harbor frieght and it really blows i could break the shit with two fingers when i do it grasshpr style its almost as strong as original

if your gonna be putting real paint on there sand all teh rattle can shit off because its softer and sucks balls. your paint is only as sood as what its sticking too

but - from reading other threads, won't bondo crack when it tried to flex? and i can't solder the plastic with the existing bondo can i?

i dont really know of any other options when it comes to buildng back up the plastics... unless i make a mold from this and cast some fiberglass replacements.... but that sounds more involved then i want to try

thanks on the tip about harbor freight - dad actually just mentioned yesterday about them selling that gun and i was going to look into getting it - maybe not anymore!

if its not too thick it shouldnt crack. try to pm grasshpr and ask him what he uses as filler.

as for the crack no dont bondo it it will never hold jsut plastic weld it if you do it right which isnt hard at all it should last pretty much forever. epoxy and fiberglass arent nearly as strong as welding it but if you do use something lik that get the most agreesive paper you can like 30 grit or someshit and really ruff it up the ruffer the better give it some crevices to bite to.
