Default Rear Brake anti rattle spring

Hiya forum!
So this repair newbie is now replacing the rear brake pads (and while I'm at it, disassembling the rear caliper and cleaning it out.)
Anyhoo, I think my rear pad spring had been knocked out of place, and I can't, for the life of me, see how it is supposed to fit back in. If I orient it according to the exploded parts diagram, I can't see how the pad will fit. If you look at pic 002, the pad won't fit within the caliper, because the two vertical portions of the spring (one on left one on right) that run along the inside edge of holder take up too much space. There's not enough cleanance. So either my spring is bent, there's something I'm not getting, or I've got the orientation wrong (that's the best I could figure out looking at the exploded parts diagram). Actually, I think I probably knocked it out of place during the "operaflute removes her rear wheel" fiasco, and that's why the pads wore sooo unevenly.

Oh - it's a 1999 Kawi EX500.

Spring should go in last. Looks like it fits down on top of the brake pad and the two arms fit against the brake caliper on the back side either side of your finger.. I mean it HAS to fit in there somehow, your just gonna have to figure it out..

Turns out I found the Clymer manual a bit misleading... the exploded parts diagram gave me the impression that it went into the holder, but it goes in the caliper itself. Duh. Pic below.
