oil change for ex500
i am totally clueless to where the plug is for the oil to pour out of. i am trying to do my own maintenance due to lack of funds, and i cant find the plug to let out the oil. also, does the ex500 have an oil filter? please lend a hand, or a picture of the plug would help enormously. thanks for your time.

Drain plug is on the bottom of the engine of course. Should be a 17 or 19 mm bolt. And yes it has an oil filter. Spin on type. Look at the front of the engine behind the exhaust header under the front motor mount...

Here's a link to the drain plug (Ron Ayers microfiche is a great info source):

The oil filter looks like a "normal" spin-on that shouldn't be too hard to find. Just make sure you torque down the drain plug to the right value and change the plug gasket. Too loose and it could leak and too tight you could strip the threads. Find out how Kawi recommends tightening the filter as well and don't forget to smear a little new oil on the filter gasket. Fill the crankcase and check the level according to Kawi's recommendations (bike level or on side stand, it matters).

I wouldn't sweat changing the aluminum washer on the oil drain plug. Unless its cracked or damaged you can re-use it. I've never had one leak on me yet.. Just be carefull about overtightening the drainplug as you can strip the oil pan threads if you get overzealous with the wrench..

Be sure to take off the belly pan/chin fairing, might be hard to see with that thing still on there ;)

Yah! Typical torque values for drain plugs are around 20 to 25 ft-lbs. That does not FEEL very tight, and one is tempted to just reef on the thing...
You can be sure that removing and replacing your drain pan to fix stripped drain plug threads is a hell of a lot more work, though!
