Default Speedometer Cable Help Please!!

What: 1987 cbr-600 hurricane

Story: Alright so before winter storage my speedometer stopped working. This included the mileage counter too. Light behind the speedo works, and the tacho works...well it did before i put it away for the winter(havent really ridden it yet to know if it doesnt work, but im assuming it does). Battery was dead at the end of the season(didnt charge it right the first time). Now I was being stupid towards the end of the season, and I didnt want to pay for a new battery, so i jumped it like 3 times to ride it. Yes I know it was stupid, and i never should of done it, no need to flame me for it. It was after the 3rd jump that the speedo stopped working. So i went straight home, parked the bike, and didnt start it again until i had to move it. Now I thought it might be something electrical, but after people telling me to check the speedo cable I did. I didnt realize this was the cable, and it had been loose all season.

Questions: So today I got around to taking the fairing off, and checkin out the cable. Now im all honesty Ive never seen a speedo cable, and ive been workin on cars for like 5 years. So i have no idea how to tell whether its bad or good. Theres a little metal rod type thing that travels through a rubber hose, and thats it on the side that goes into the speedo. Now is that all theres suppose to be? Just a metal rod stickin out, that you stick into the hole thats beneath the speedo?

I did not disconnect it down by the wheel. But when I went to pull on the metal rod to see if it had tension(i onno what im doin with this) there was none. It felt like I could pull it all the way out of the rubber protector. Ofcourse I didnt because I was afraid that was bad, and I didnt wanna screw things up even more.

Thank you for any info that you all give! My Clymer(sp?) manual had nothing about speedometers in it! I just hope its not electrical

If the little metal rod can be pulled in and out of the rubber sleeve, then it's busted. It's snapped somewhere in the middle.

Yup that was it! Thanks again! Un screwed it from by the wheel, and took the whole thing off. I then pulled the rod out and it didnt look to bad.. Then I went to push it back in, and boom! out came the broken piece on the other side! Put a call into the local motorcycle shop and went and picked up a new one! Havent riden it to see if it fixed it or not cause I have to go to work, and i havent felt like puttin the new battery in yet!
