Default F4 won't turn over

My cousin just bought an 2000 F4 with a salvaged title for a little over $2k. It started fine about a week ago and then it just sat for a few weeks while we ordered the cosmetic parts that needed replacing. To make a long story short, after removing the left shifter/footpeg mechanism, we noticed the bike will not turn over even though battery stays on a float charger. Instrument cluster illuminates and horn works fine, but it won't turn over. No noise whatsoever when ignition button is pressed. I checked the ignition fuse and its fine. Any suggestions?

Is the starter solenoid clicking at all?

Check the connections on the starter solenoid to make sure they are ok.

If they are, verify the problem by jumping the solenoid with a pair of pliers. If the bike turns over, you have a connection problem somewhere, or your solenoid is infact bad. Jumping the solenoid allows you to rule out the starter motor and battery as a source of the problem.

Kick stand switch? clutch switch? Try either testing with meter or jumping them out. When that fails buy a Yamaha.

when you were messing with the pegs on the left side, did you disconnect the side stand safety switch?

that or did you kick it in gear when you removed the peg / shifter linkage? Look to see if the neutral light is on. Its funny that it all of a sudden it quit working. Try checking that. The side stand switch will only inhibit the bike from starting when its in gear and the stand goes down. same with clutch switch, you should only have to use that when the bike is in gear.

Sooo if I have the bike in gear with the sidestand down, clutch pulled in, the bike won't turn over? I figured it would still start and die when you released the clutch. That's how it goes on my Ninja at least. Thanks for the info guys, keep it coming.

wont start period with the stand down and in gear. Not on any of my Hondas. That may be it. Do you get a green neutral light?

+1 If its not in neutral and the kickstand is down, it won't start, but you'll have power to everything. Sounds like your problem.

Damn, I'm an idiot. Thanx everyone. I thought as long as I had the clutch pulled in it would start until I released the clutch with the stand down. Fired up fine. DOH!

You didn't try anything yourself before you got on the board and had us start chasing down a problem that didn't exist?
