Default PLease help. 02' R1 not charging.

Hey guys. I have a friend with an 02' R1 and the charging system is dead. The bike has approximately 14k miles and has a new battery. We are trying to get it fixed for a trip to Deal's gap Saturday and already have a stator on the way just in case. Are stators common to replace on these? Any help is hugely appreciated!

How do you know the charging system is bad?

I would say the most likely failure is the rvoltage regulator or the wiring harness. The stator is kinda simple and not likely to fail but it could happen. Can;t say I've heard of any common charging system issues with R1s either.

On the yamahas you have to remeber that you have the stator (charge coils) the generator (large rotating bowl of metal with magnets) to produce the voltage. This goes up into the REGULATOR/RECTIFIER where thru a process of diodes is converted to 12VDC (well really it is just converted to DC and can be as high as 17 volts but thats besides the point)

So you have three suspects and all the wiring inbetween them.

You can check the stator with a an OHM meter to make sure each lead is good (3 yellow wires)

Generators usually never have problems and if it did you would know about it in a hurry

Regulator rectifiers can go bad or loose ground.

Or you could simply have a busted charge lead from the regulator rectifier that sends voltage back to the battery.

So...........like Redstar said..........how do you know the charging system is bad? Have you diagnosed any of it?

Very low voltage and the bike has a dead battery after about 20 miles. I'll check with him and get back to you guys. Thanks for the help.

Okay, a tech says there is zero output from the charging system. He is going to check the resistance of the stator. I'll check back.

Stator output is just about the easiest test you can do. If any one of your stator leads is not producing the specified voltage listed in the service manual, your stator is in-fact back.

I have in 1 case *HEARD of a magneto going bad. Somehow the magnets lost a bit of their magnetizing power and the actual magneto had to be replaced.

Check a short to ground, and stator lead resistance. If there is any discrepancy there, your stator is in-fact bad.

Also, read up on Hybrids post. You may want to go ahead and check the rest of your charging system even if your stator does end up being bad.

good for you!

my stator went bad and I think messed up my regulator/rectifier

Honda also changed the wiring harness, they said to just do the stator/rectifier may not solve the problem... wiring needs to be done

electrical systems seem very sensitive
