Help Me Fix ItA great place to post any problems you maybe having while working on your motorcycle. Most of us are do-it-yourselfers so this is a great way to share any information pertaining to fixing something or adding something on.
well, my battery died about a week ago.... like a complete fool... i got impatient and instead of going to get the battery charged i decided to jump it with my car (honda prelude)... of course it didnt start... i then decided to jump it with my friends bike which of course did not work either... today i just put a brand new battery in it to see what would happen... the lights and the tach all lit up... however, when i flipped on the run switch i did not hear the fuel injectors engage... did i fry my wiring? what is the next step i need to make... i am so frustrated with all of this... if anyone could lend a hand or give me some freaking direction if would greatly appreciate it...
I don't own a fuel injected bike man.....but my first step would be to check and inspect all of your fuses and relays. You may have just popped a fuse to the injectors.
FYI: The sound youre hearing shouldnt be the injectors engaging, but rather the pump priming itself to build pressure in the fuel system for when you crank the bike and the injectors fire. That's assuming bike fuel injection is similar to efi on a car.

Yes, it should be the fuel pump you are hearing, the injedtors run pretty quiet.
I second the notion of you checking your fuses, The way you describe it doesnt really sound like a dead battery. You could also go through and check all the connections, maybe one has wiggled loose.

Not to mention fuel injectors don't prime cylinders. They don't fire until they get the signal that the engine is cranking over. Not to distract from the topic at hand or anything.... Just post-whoring so I can get a colored username.

Hope you had your car off when you were jumping the bike. I heard you will fry the ignition if your car is running.

Well, a bikes battery is 12 volts, a cars battery is 12 volts. So in that statement there is no argument, right? everyone agrees.
So if both bike and car are off, it will be fine because they are at the same voltage.
---------------------------
A bikes charging system charges at upwards of 14volts. (different bikes vary +/- 1 or 2 volts, then vary even more if under load or not.)
A cars charging system charges at 14.4 volts.
There is only .4 volts difference. If I farted into the wind I could make .4 volts from the static. The difference isnt enough to make a difference. There should be no argument here.
----------------------------
A bike has an ampacity off the alternator and battery of about 45 amps (again, varies by bike).
A car has an ampacity off alternator and battery of 60 amps (varies by car).
This difference in ampacity is big. But, it doesnt matter. Ampacity is dependent on resistance (things turned on). If your car was putting out 60 amps all the time, every wire in the car would catch on fire from the heat, same in a bike. They dont put out maximum amperage unless the car is calling for it (stereo bumpin, high beams on, wipers on, defroster on, etc.)
So if you hook up your bike to a car, it isnt going to get a zap of 60 amps through everything. It will only get what it needs.
Even if it did get a zap of 1000 amps and 5000 volts, you have a main fuse that would blow before any damage was done. The only thing you would damager is the battery, because you are hooked up to it directly. And even if that were to happen, the battery wouldnt get damaged because two batteries can run like that, even if different voltage/amperage ratings.
LOL funny story... We once jumped a bike with a truck and it blew out the headlight (like no shit blew out the glass and everything) and a mess of other stuff man it was funny as hell!

Ive been sitting here trying to figure out why that would happen, becuase logically, and technically, it cant.
Two things- Was it a really old 6 volt bike? (I am 99% sure I know the answer, but had to throw it out there)
I am 99.99% sure you must have had the jumper cables on backwards on one battery. It is the only way this would have happened.
Neg goes to Neg, Pos to Pos. Sometimes (I have seen it) jumpers break, and people need to reattach the ends. They then swap them on accident, meaning if you put red to red, black to black, It wont be right. When you do that it makes the voltage 24v DC instead of making the amperage capacity higher. When you double the voltage on dc stuff, most of the time it doesnt like it, just as your story told.
