Youll burn more calories that way than running or biking, and your knees will thank you.

It's not he bike that does very little, it's doing very little on any machine or activity you do that will do very little for you in the way of results. You love the treadmill so you stick to it. I'm suggesting she find what she enjoys doing and stick to it for a while, be it the bike, elliptical, treadmill, rowing machine, stair stepper, or jumping rope.

zxhunter, we're misunderstanding each other. i mean does a bike affect the lower body moreso than a treadmill? i feel like on a bike, you're using your leg muscles differently than on a treadmill. so, in terms of both cardio and working out muscles, is a bike any more effective than a treadmill would be?

By the ways I mentioned earlier. Find a good role model and see how they do what they do. Have a picture of yourself as you want to look, either in real life or in your mind and keep going back to it and telling yourself that's how you want to look.
I am the most relaxed and euphoric after a great workout, so I'm really motivated to get back to that feeling as often as I can. The only thing that beats it is sex.
But there's also the smug sense of superiority that you can harbor. You're faster, stronger, more able, better looking, and far healthier than the people who want to sit around all day and drool in front of the television. You'll love how you look and how you feel and won't feel guilty for the occasional pigging out on junk food.

Avoid the jump ropes with the leather crappy "rope" that won't ever break in. It's like trying to jump around a 4 year-old's scribbled version of a jump rope. The nylon ropes are great. I loves me some jump rope too.

The treadmill, if you're going by just the numbers. However, since you already said it bores you, you'll probably be spending more time on another machine anyhow, so in the long run you'll get the best benefit out of using whatever machine you do choose, by changing anything from resistance to speed to time.
I get bored as hell running in place. I think most people do. The only time I've really liked to run was when I got to lead the running program for getting everyone into shape for the Navy's fitness tests. There were trails and woods and everything, plenty of scenery to keep interested. But inside, I can play around on the bike all day, there's a ton of features to change, it's easy to go fast on and I can change positions (hands at my sides, hands forward on the bars, etc.).

1. Take pics and see the difference. Take a pic now and take the next one in a month and see the difference. Don't forget to kick your ass hard while in the gym.
2. Surf bb.com (the forum section of bodybuilding.com that is) and find what you wanna look like. That will sound pretty but looking at other guys who have the body you wanna have motivates me as hell.
3. Don't forget the music. I will never listen to ramstein/metallica/hate breed/etc but when I'm in the gym - that's the music of choice for me What I'm trying to say is you have to find the music that motivates you the most and that's not always your favorite music.

Cardio...
I just started doing some interval training although I am not overweight at all. It takes alot less time with the same results as someone running on a treadmill for 45min at a steady pace. Today it's all about free weights for me. I lift to fail and always get protein into your system after an intense muscle workout. Working out also improves mental function. Who wants to be fat and stupid?

This works for my friend, but its NOT for everyone. You need to change your diet big time.
She did this, and lost all the extra baggage within a month. Then again, she wasn't that fat to begin with. What I like about it is that its easy on your wallet, predictable, and easy to make.
Yes, I am aware that its best to eat 5 smaller meals a day. But not everyone could do that cause of work.
Anyway, here you go:
KEEP HYDRATED ALL DAY WITH WATER!
You can drink orange juice, skim milk, water, whey protein shake (with skim milk)
Breakfast:
Flavored Oatmeat (the ones that come in little packets): Fiber
-Add Blueberries
-Add Rasberries
-Skim Milk
Lunch (or eat throughout the day):
A collection of your (one each) favorite fruits and make a fruit salad.
Bananas
Apples
Mango
Strawberries
Dinner:
Chicken Breast (cut into small pieces), pan fried with olive oil
-Add brocolli
-Add carrots (slice into small pieces for those who cant take the taste)
-Steam veggies to get the most out of them, nutritionally
Of all three, dinner is probably the hardest one to get used to. It taste absolutely plain, steamed veggies and plain chicken breast...Cut it into small pieces so that it'll be more like a salad. Oh, and if you feel that there arent enough protein in this diet, go ahead and supplement it with some Whey Protein.
And for the workouts, do what people say: High intensity workout. To tone up, I find that fast reps are better for toning, slow reps are better for building. But it all depends on the weights (if you use any).
good luck
