Isn't a lot of this genetics though? My youngest son is a video game junkie/computer geek, but he is very thin. My other son is also very thin & very tall, but he's much more active. And both are healthy.
Increasing rates of obesity argue that it is more environment than genetics (we can't evolve THAT fast). There actually may be some specific genetics that allows individuals who have low activity levels stay thin--sorta the opposite of being fat cuz of genes.
The inactivity and poor diet affects those who are predisposed to obesity & health problems much more than those who aren't, perhaps. I guess this is where it would have helped if they had been eating right and been more active from an early age.
And this is something we didn't already know? Fat ass videogaming slobs are everywhere. Personally I think skyrocketing food costs could be the best thing to happen to the US. I saw some sappy story on the news where the mom had to tell her kids they could only have a tiny dinner that night because they had to spend the rest of their money on gas. Too bad the kids were enormous and in need of a year of tiny dinners. So if people can't afford to eat as much then maybe they'll start loosing some weight. Unfortunately it's more likely they'll just migrate to cheaper food, fast food.
Here's a better solution. Make a couple advancements in liposuction and then allow fatties to get their fat sucked out and returned to them in nice little bottles. The fat bottles can then be used as biofuel to power the nation via "fattie" reactors that will be sold to homeowners. That way there'll be less fat people and we'll solve the energy crisis. They could even power cars off the stuff. Then the fatties could cheaply drive to Burger King to buy more food and get more fat and then end up with more fuel. It's a closed loop system!

Being thin doesn't always mean being healthy either. Even skinny kids can have high blood pressure, high resting heart rates, and digestive problems.
My brother's as thin as me, total video game junkie (a manager at Game Stop, no less), and only a year older. He's on blood pressure meds. We were both "healthy" as kids, but the lifestyle starts to manifest about mid-late 20's, even for skinny sh*ts like me.
Sadly, I think this trend pretty much started with my generation. First Nintendo came out in, what, '88? It's all downhill from there.

This is why I'm glad my daughter stays with my mexican mother in law during the day. She cooks all fresh food, lots of veggies (not the unhealthy tex-mex that comes to mind). I know I visit McDs way too often, but hope to keep changing so as to provide a good example.
All in all it shows our continual growth of apathy and complacency that is ruining our country.

I believe a very small percentage of this is genetic but the rest is just plain laziness and bad eating habits.
Too many busy(or lazy) parents out there that don't take the time to go out and play with there kids and don't take the time to cook a decent meal, instead the go through McDonalds drive thru and get them a Supersize meal that has enough fat and calories to last them a week.
They are too busy to spend some quality time with there kids and as long as they are out of there hair and being quiet playing videos games all day they are fine with that.
It sickens me to see all the obese kids out there. Half will be dead before 50 if they keep up that life style.
Worse thing is that it's become accepted! It's cool for these young girls to go around with there pot belly hanging out of there shirt now? It's shame (not really ;-) that these girls 40 something Moms are in better shape and hotter then there 20 something daughters!
another byproduct of being overly politically correct
As george carlin (?) said once, if you are smoking, people will feel obliged to tell you all day long that you are killing yourself, but if you tell that to the fat lady in mcdonalds, you're looking for an asswhoopin

What it takes in most cases (NOT ALL), is controlling what food you bring into your home (how many kids shop for themselves?) and fostering interests in things that require physical activity.
I did read where kids actually play LESS now even if they participate in organized sports. Apparently, they spend a lot of downtime at practices as compared to kids playing "pick up" non-organized sports.

Now that my youngest has a job, he's been buying a lot of his own food, and he's eating too much fast food for my liking. Except for the other night, I came home from work and he was eating chinese take-out! And he didn't even buy me any! WTF?
