Default What's up with screamers?

I did it sometimes when I was younger, but lately it has been kind of irritating me. People yelling during heavy lifts. Not just a grunt or a short "ah!", but a long "AHHHHHHHHH!". To me, it says, "Hey, look how much I lift. Isn't it heavy?" I lift pretty heavy, at least for my age, but I know some of you are ridiculous. Cough, Godfather, cough. But I never do that. Does anybody else think it's stupid when people in the gym start yelling?

It's probably just because the person doing it at my gym is an egocentric douche bag who brags about himself while simultaneously putting down others for doing the same thing.

grunting enhances risk of Hernias, not sure about screaming, Apenutz might be able to help with that.

lol other than physcological impacts, I don't know of any physiological impacts screaming or grunting has. Perhaps the other trainers on here can lend some insight.

personally I think it's kind of annoying. If I'm screaming or grunting like that I'm doing it cause I hurt and I'm lifting way more than I should.

True for some but not for others. I Grunt but i dont scream. I only do it to make sure im exhaleing during push for chest, legs, shoulders. doing this gives you that little boost you need for that last Rep. Screaming does absolutly nothing but make you look funny.

and as far as screaming or grunting causing Hernias thats a false statement.

Holding your breather during your pushes will increase your chances for a Hernia and broken blood vessels.

I can't stand the loud grunters / screamers. I also can't stand the guys that have to drop the weights on their last rep. All of that tells me that that person is a: lifting to much and b: showing off how much they are lifting. I may grunt a little on heavier ones, but I keep it to a minimum.

i guess i was always told since day 1, smooth exhale and no grunting. i guess i will have to do some more research on grunting then.

if you still have energy/physical capacity to scream and/or grunt while lifting, you're not working out hard enough.

Maybe I should yell and grunt at meets, then. I actually have memory loss from a dead lift once. My coach said that I re-did the lift without the bar, even waited for the ref to give me a thumbs up, then set the "bar" down, and then stumbled around. Must've looked pretty funny, cause when I came too, everyone was just laughing while I was on the ground. I didn't even know where I was at first.

Usually on my last couple of reps I'll exhale rather loudly through my teeth. Kind of a "SHHHHHHHHHH" sound.

It's mostly subconscious, but I realize that I was pretty loud afterward.

Personally, I like the partners that yell at each other. I always want to throw in little comments like "YEAH STOP BEING A PUSSY. YOU LIFT LIKE MY SISTER"

I grunt on my last rep or 2 cause i'm exhaling and pushing and making sure I keep my form good. It just helps and works 4 me.

Well, the yelling motivational phrases and the grunting are psychological motivations to finish a lift.. and remember 315 or 225 is pretty heavy for some people. I know I can't squat or bench that much. I often push my workout partners with comments and motivation... I don't scream it generally, just loud enough for them to hear me. It's more of a distraction I think, but it does seem to help me when a partner gives me encouragement.

Controlling your breath helps in many ways... getting oxygen to the muscles is one of them, full lungs supporting muscle structure being another. I just don't see where you have to be excessively loud with it... then again, when I go to the gym, I go to work out and sweat... not look pretty or be noticed by everyone.

Grunting a little, or exhaling through your teeth are no big deal when you're pushing around a lot of weight.

However, there is no reason to scream at all unless you've dropped a 45lb plate on your toes. It doesn't help you one bit, and it makes you look like an ass. When someone grunts really loud or screams I don't think they are a hardass or even working that hard; I think they are an attention starved dipshit who should just STFU and lift quietly.
