do you gus work your legs with weights? i've been doing everything but legs. I hate doing them, my legs are super lean from skatin for 6 years and i always do some kind of cardio either racquetball or treadmill. but my dad tells me all the time that if you do legs that it help the rest of your body grow, this didnt make sense to me but i dont know. i asked him why and he said it just does. I'm thinking bullshit but i thought i would ask.

it just does :p
lean muscle mass burns more fat. since the leg muscles are some of the largest in the body, it stands to reason as you work them more, you burn more fat, which makes it look as if the rest of your body 'grows'... may be that's what he means?
I work legs often, if not daily. They are, after all, the foundation on which you stand or move. Personally, i also find it amusing to see someone at the gym all built in the upper body with puny legs.

^^ if you are hurting that bad and limping you are causing more damage to your legs than you should and you won't get the same returns as you would if you worked to exhaustion and just felt tired legs the next day. Just a fyi :p

My theory on why this works is as follows:
Calories are energy, right? So you burn calories everytime you work out.
I believe that there is some sort of ratio as to how much weight burns how much calories. For instance lifting 50 lbs one time may burn 10 calories, but if you double the wweight to 100 lbs, you burn 20. This is regardless of muscle type.
So, my theory is that for every lb you lift, you burn x calories, so if you can lift more weight with your legs, you burn more calories!
In order to build mass you have to have a good leg workout.
why? in not saying your wrong or even trying to imply it because I have no idea. I'm just curious. thats the same thing my dad said but he gave me no explanation.

that, and working muscles use energy (calories). Working larger muscles uses more energy (calories). This is the theory (basically) behind compound exercises being the best fat burning exercises, because they involve large groups of muscles working at the same time.

actually i usually neglect legs, but i also have really tight hamstrings that no matter what i do they feel like they have a knife in them for the next couple days. when it comes to legs it seems like i put them at the end of the week and then in the old days i would try to justify neglecting them, i dont think i have worked them for more then 2 weeks on once a week training. so it always seems like the first time everytime.

A hard workout on legs is always fun for me. In the gym I usually get a good laugh out of the muscle head guys who never work on their legs. Seems they are always in front of the mirror posing with the dumb bells.

^^ lol. My favorite is when I've done 6 sets of 10 reps in the amount of time it took that other guy to do 1 set of the same. A lot of people at my gym seem afraid to sweat when they workout. You go in there and almost no one is dripping. You can see who's in better shape just by watching the people work out.

When it was explained to me the "expert's" theory was that any time a muscle is used your body has to produce endorphens (and other substances..) to both support the use and to heal them. Your legs have huge muscles so it helps your body produce more of there endorphens which helps other muscle groups. Kinda made sense to me then as he had a way better explanation lol.
