I live in a large apartment complex and would like to park my bike here permanently however im very paranoid about leaving it outside throughout the day/night as I do not have theft insurance. I am going to keep the bike covered at all times so not advertising my nice bike to any possible thieves.
Does anyone have any other suggestions to deter a thief, besides spending money on a gps tracker or security system? I was thinking that even taping a piece of paper to the bike stating something along the lines of "this bike is equipped with a hidden gps tracker and security system. Do not steal unless you would like to go to jail." Thats just a quick thought but that might do the job. Any suggestions?
I live literally in the ghetto and have parked my bike out on the curb for years. Aside from one idiot driver tapping my 600R a few years ago and knocking it over (to the tune of zero damage other than a new scratch on the frame slider) nobody has ever touched it.
Your best friend is insurance. Get that. Skip all the stupid shit you're thinking of.
Buy disc locks for front and rear...AND, get a 2+" chain to secure it to a pole or some other stationary object. The more hassle you make it for them, the more they will look for someone else's bike to steal.
Theft insurance is your best bet. Even heavy duty chains won't deter determined thieves, and disc locks don't keep 2 guys from throwing it in the back of a pickup in 20 seconds. :/
Locks and chains are deterrents, but they are not going to stop a good determined thieve. Honestly, why even bother with all that crap? After they steal the bike you'll be left with no bike and no money because you spent so much on useless "deterrent" stuff.
Meh, if someone stole my high mileage Versys I'd be happy, there is no way in hell I can sell it for as much as the insurance would pay me for it!
Yeah, I was pretty set on just riding my YZF600R forever because it was beaten to hell over the years and put back together rough after vandalizations, etc., figured I'd never get more than $1-2k for it even if I cleaned it up the best I could (Plus I liked it, it was a damn nice bike for such an old design in 2006)
Then someone caused an accident and their insurance wrote me a check for just under $5k to write it off.
Me too! Insurance is cheap on my bike because FZ6's are pretty much a low theft item. I do put an alarmed 10mm chain on it. That is to keep the joy riders off. NOTHING can stop a real thief that really wans your bike. He can always find a couple of sub-contractors and just carry it off. I put it around my swingarm & rear wheel It is long enough to put around a pole if there was one handy.
Not enough critters to damage my house or my property.
It gets hot here but if I leave at 6 a.m. and get home by noon the temp swing is about 60-90 degrees. I head straight for the mountains and it really only gets a bit warm/uncomfortable on the last 40 or so miles home. In the evenings once the sun starts setting it cools off to "not horrible" most nights so I can take a quick trip around the back roads if I want. Since June my a/c has only stayed on all night a handful of times, the majority of the time I can have my windows open by 10 p.m.
I agree with you on the 40 degrees though, anything under thst is just punishing yourself.
I can't do nights. I'm old enough to have problems with glare. MY rods and cones are worn out. So when oncoming lights flash across my eyes, it blinds me for what must be a few milliseconds but seems like years. The pucker factor is too high for me. Age prevents me from riding in the dark or the rain. If it was an emergency, I could ride in hot or cold weather. But At 63, in an emergency, I call some healthy young man to come deal with it.
2 screaming disc locks from ebay, ($17 a piece). Thick chain, and a GPS tracker. (140 from ebay and 20 a month for the service. Plus a cover. If you move the cover the motion detectors on the locks scream, if you manage to take the bike it will alert me on my phone the moment it leaves the spot. Then I grab my friends, a gun, and a camera. I'll alert the cops as well but rest assured we will show up at your door before they do.
So just idle it longer(15 minutes or so) so it reaches the proper operating temperature?
