So I bought a Harley
And damnit it was the worst shitbox ever! Ok so its been a long time since I posted but well...you know how I do..I come and go like a drunk in the night.
Back to the Harley.
So I had this 2002 Avalanche Z71. Pretty good condition but it had 298k and counting.
I put an ad up for sale $6k or trade. A while passes...and after all the Mustangs, old boxes and other odd trade request-I get hit with a 1997 Harley Davidson Fat Boy.
Hmmm...Eh...why not? So I meet up with the guy and take her for a cruise and seems ok. Cool lets do the trade.
I trade up and cruise her home. Im kinda excited but still frustrated by the lack of power..eh I brush it off with some bullshit self encouraging words "But its a Harley" and "its made for cruising". Ok so she lines up next to my other bikes and talk about a pimple in pubic hair. She stood out bad. Even the Vmax was like "who and what the shit is this?" So I put her somewhere else. Ok....riding time.
Don the black Shoei take her for a spin and wtf...She can barely break 80...Ford Tempos were passing me up. I was like this is too much work. So I get off the highway and go home. Pick up the max and like a Glock in her serpa-she felt perfect.
I rode and rode and rode that damn Harley and could not adjust to it...it was slow, loud and vibrated like a mechanical bull on Urban Cowboy. So back to craigslist. I clean her ride her and during the testing video the damn gear shifter breaks! Clean breaks off..wtf..Im furious now. She is asking to be given away. So...I take the shifter off and weld a humongous bead on it, grind it, polish it and shes good.
I ended up trading her for a good 2000 BMW 540i Sport. with 128k miles.
I will NEVER eeeeeeeevvver get another Harley again...Ever! Ever!
Oh by the way...according to Harley owners...28k miles is ALOT of miles....Geezus...

I can't discount them completely, but that is one ugly tasteless bike.
I'm glad you have a BMW now

My old Harley hit 80+ with ease.
The only thing I really hated about the Harley was that if I rode any other bike earlier in the day, the Harley felt cheap and poorly built. That and starting wasn't a guaranty.

I was gonna call BS on the Harley until I looked up the numbers for that year model. Around 50 crank hp claimed by harley, so probably around 35-40 rwhp. That is pretty pitiful for a 630lb bike that cuts a big hole through the air. Finally something my WR250X can outrun lol.

I am pretty open minded about bikes, but I have test rode several old and new Harleys.....and they are so short on power as to be non-starters.
Sorry about your misadventure; we all live and learn!

That Harley is pretty damn ugly! 28k in NOT a lot of miles for a Harley, those guys are just trying to make you sell it cheap. Im not really sure what the pics of your BMW have to do with your story though?

It's a HUGE deal to hit 100 hp on a modified harley, and I've seen kits to do it that are $8,000
harley's are weak. only the porsche designed vrod motor has any power to it

It has a auto/steptronic 5 speed. Its pretty peppy, fires up every single time OMG magnum the seats are so adjustable even my sac is happy. We are talking mega comfort and pretty good gas mileage for a V8-about 22 easy.

Usually when you trade or sell something for something...The BMW is what I got for the Harley. Here at SBN we have the "pictures or it didn't happen rule".

The Harley is a big-inch push-rod v-twin meant for laid-back cruising. The Fat Boy is one hot motorcycle if you ditch those terrible handlebars and back-rest, install an engine performance kit from Screaming Eagle, install a 2-1 exhaust to increase power and smoothness, and maybe do some suspension work. I think you missed out on some fun.
