cash in hand conundrum

So here I am selling my cbr 600 f3. I put my ad on craigs. and When i talk to the guy he isn't going to buy today he just wants to look at it. blah blah blah.

I tell him cash in hand to ride I tell him that its only cause we don't know each other and I heard stories about people just riding off.

he returns with "how do i know you are not going to run off with my money" says he'll let me hold his ID. but I tell him "No I prefer cash".

So that left us with a stale mate and he figures it is not going to work out.

I hate being pushy but how do you guys go about this cash in hand to protect your ride???

Dude, don't trust no one. Cash in hand plus DL w/motorcycle endorsement in hand. Bring another friend also with vid cam just in case. That's how I did my sell. And if you really want to up the ante, have a couple of riding buddies ride along with him. Just sayin

Always have cash in hand.

A drivers license is no good. It could be a fake, wrong address...

Tell him to bring a buddy if he's worried you'll drive off while he's out riding it.

Tell him to meet you at a notary. Have all of the paperwork complete, do the deal. Tell him you'll wait there for 20 minutes and if the deal doesn't work out, you rip up the paperwork.

If not, tell him good luck in his search for a test ride.

Or get full coverage. These days, bikes are worth more to insurance companies than they are to potential buyers.

its a 95 cbr. ain't worth the coverage. just to make a sale i think.

It's your sale your rules. Don't let him boss you around. You want cash. Then so be it. No test rides without cash.

funny thing. one of the guys that was texting me all day long finally met me at 11pm. It ended up being my friend's brother from high school.

It was the first guy that met me too.

I still told him $200 in hand for a test ride. He had no problem with that

took it for a ride and loved it. I got a deposit, and picks up by Friday.

I would have qualms about letting a potential sale ride by sport bike without a substantial deposit. I worry less about good faith and more about a crash. Fairings are perilously expensive.

I have never let someone test ride a bike, and I never will.

I have seen people rash up bikes on a test ride, say "sorry about that, call your insurance company. Im not buying it, its been down hard."

When I sold my Ninja, I wrote up a test ride agreement that we both signed that stated if the potential buyer caused any damage to the bike during the test ride, they purchased the bike. I included all the damage to the bike (small imperfections in the paint and location) and also included a section where the potential buyer could add any additional damage that he saw (kinda like renting a car). I required the asking price (or agreed upon selling price) in cash while they test rode it. I also stated in my CL ad that test rides would only be given with cash in hand, so there were no surprises. The buyer had no problem with my terms, and he bought the bike after the test ride.

I did basically the same thing in the past when selling dirt bikes and four wheelers as well. Though I never had anything to sign... Just cash in hand. I don't know for certain if my test ride agreement would hold up in court, but I had full coverage on the bike anyhow for just in case.

This. Happened to me when selling my first bike... it was a guy I knew personally as well, not a stranger. He took a corner too hot and low-sided. The bike wasn't too badly damaged, it just slid. Bike's left side, plastics and mirror, were properly messed up.

All I got was a "hey sorry man, don't be mad". Ha... don't be mad...? I felt like giving the news channels a murder to report on when he said that.

I felt it wasn't worth the hassle and head-ache of trying to drag him through small claims for a few hundred dollars worth of plastics, so I just ate the cost and vowed to never let anyone test-ride ever again without cash in hand.

If anyone gives you a hard time about test-riding without cash in hand, tell them to kiss your ass.
