Boot Fit

Hey- took one of you guy's advice and just bought some Gaerne GP1s through compacc. The price was great but I'm a little worried about the fit, specifically at the ankle. I usually wear Sidi Streetburners & these have an ankle strap, so I had that thing on tight. These boots just have the zipper up the side & then a ratchet system at the top. The ankle feels very loose in comparison. Is this normal? How snug should these boots fit me?

The foot size is perfect, but I'm not sure if the rest adds up. Could be just my unfamiliarity with the style of boot though. I'm used to all the straps and whatnot on the sidis. I looked at theirs and other race boots as well and noticed most just have this zipper up the side. Is the tightness a preference thing, or could the loose fit of these boots end up being unsafe for me?

If it's a preference thing, I may try to get used to them. If not I'll probably get rid of em & try some on at a local store.

My boots are too big around the calf, but once I tuck my jeans into them (under textile pants) or my leathers they fit pretty snug

Can't comment on the fit, but if you keep 'em please post a review. I'm replacing my Puma 1000s next year, and while I'll probably grab another pair of the same (freaking LOVE these boots), I've been eyeing the Gaerne boots as well.

As long as they stay on your feet without rubbing up and down on the back of your heel, they are probably ok.

I have touring boots with just a zipper. They are snug up around where like running shoes would end, and then they flare out a little bit and get looser. It's so you can tuck pants and stuff into them.

If that helps at all, I'd be surprised- but it's all I've got on the subject.

Yup, they're loose at the top, but I only plan on wearing them with leathers & tucking them in seems to take care of any issues there.

even the same brand of boots can fit different from model to model. I found this out this summer when I bought a pair of sidi st air to replace my sidi vertebra.
the foot area is a tad bigger. I tried a few different pair of inserts. the dr.scholls' gel work insoles worked out perfect. still a tad snug but I know they'll loosen up over time.

My Dainese TRQ out is pretty snug at the ankles. I have Streetburners too. That's whether I wear them with pants tucked in or out. When standing in them, are you able to laterally bend your ankles? The main reason I went to higher boots were for the ankle stability. If that's not there, then it's not working. Still though, they don't have to be snug and hugging the ankles to be protective... just have to have enough tightness to actually prevent you from rolling the ankle.

I mean I can't bend them any more than if I were barefoot. So they aren't restrictive, but I'm not sure if they're made to be that way & will protect me from really going past that point, or if they should keep me from getting to that point to begin with. I'm thinking about maybe going down a size & seeing how that feels.

Guess I got lucky shopping online for the streetburners, but maybe should've gone in person for these.

Just never worn a full boot before so I dont know how it's supposed to feel.

Both my boots that have calf adjustments (SMX-Plus & Vertigo Corsa) would be loose around the calf if I didn't wear strap-on knee/shin armor underneath riding jeans, but with them on the fit is perfect. Tucking the suit in for the track gives an appropriately snug fit as well.

I owe a few people here on SBN some pics from a bit ago because they wanted to see just how knee/shin armor helps a track-focused boot do its job better when in casual-look street riding use (without a suit or leather pants to tuck in the calf of the boots).
