If you ride in cool weather R1 is okay, if you ride in the heat in the southern U.S. , its like riding on top of a Furnace, very annoying.
Cant speak for the BMw

Pretty toasty along the frame rails, which are used as a secondary heat sink. Exhaust and engine fan direction aren't bad.

Entertaining posts.
BMW is the machine to be on, I don't know why anyone would consider an R1 when the beemer is on the market for a little more cash. It's sad really, I've been waiting for Yamaha to 98 the competition like they did with the original R1. I've had a couple R1's since they came out and it breaks my heart to watch Yamaha sell bloated, underpowered machines that sound nice to it's consumers. I guess they are following Harley Davidson's philosophies. Yamaha and Honda COULD step up and answer BMW's threat but they sit there idle. As of next spring I'll be riding a HP4 competition model from BMW, all the mods and 3 years warranty. I guess the Germans understand.

Why we don't see another CBR900RR from Honda I have no idea. What I mean by this is another incredible leap that redefines literbikes. Perhaps because they sell a ton of the CBR1000RR. As neat as the crossplane engine is, the R6 is a mental bike. Needs to be updated but the damn thing was made with passion and a certain singlemindedness. WTF Yamaha? Where is our R10 or R9 RWhatever? Where is the passion and the certitude of purpose? BMW seems to have it. The Panegale demonstrates it.

So I take time off for a a Veteran's Day weekend break to find everyone flipping out over a R1 vs BMW thread?
It's pretty cut and dry, The R1 can be found cheaper, but for the price difference the BMW can out perform it. The R1 can sound better, but the BMW can track better. The R1 maybe found almost at any motorsports, but BMW motorsports offer test rides.
Unless your idea of riding a motorcycle is chilling at a Starbucks, go with a BMW. I love the R1 and everything but I can't say that I would pick a BMW over it for any reason besides financial. Hell if you was really worried about finances, you wouldn't even considering getting a liter bike anyway.

=$10700?
A stock S1000RR costs what, $14 or 15k base?
Also, maybe you should look at my list of previous bikes...
EDIT: might want to also take a look at this. +15rwhp on the new ZX10R? Yeah its a waste...

$9k for your "new" R1 is pretty much unheard of and is a rare find. Lucky for you, but everyone knows they are about $13k+ from the dealer (+TTT). Its not exactly an apples to apples comparison of a new R1 and S1000RR.
A $15k S1000RR is worth every penny. Not saying the R1 is not a good bike because it is, but your price was not ideal.
Just saying.
